Robert Edward McCracken (born February 25, 1982) is the lead singer and songwriter of The Used, an American rock band.
Early life
McCracken was born in Provo, Utah, and he grew up in Orem, Utah. He was raised in a Mormon family with three sisters (Katie, Melanie, Rachel), and one younger brother (Joseph Taylor). McCracken has admitted that he read progressively as a result of his mother's reputation, who was a schoolteacher. He started playing the trumpet in a local band called "I'm With Stupid" at age 12. He attended Timpanogos High School for a brief period until dropping out at 16.
Bert, the youngest son of the family, enjoyed a happy home life as a child, but his parents and his grandparents' opinions disagreed as he grew into an adult. He protested against his parents and against their Mormon faith, eventually leaving the Latter-day Saint Church. He dropped out of high school and left his house soon after. He was homeless for a few months before he figured out how much money he needed for an apartment, then-girlfriend Kate.
Personal life
When McCracken was dating Kelly Osbourne to her mother's annoyance and indignation, he appeared on MTV's The Osbournes.
As the recording of The Used's second album In Love and Death came to an end, McCracken's then-pregnant ex-girlfriend Kate died of a heroin overdose.
McCracken married Alison, his Australian fiancée, at a private reception in Los Angeles in July 2008. He and his wife moved from Los Angeles to Sydney, Australia, where their first daughter, Cleopatra Rose McCracken, was born in January 2014. Minnie Bloom McCracken, the couple's second child, was born on March 23, 2018.
McCracken has struggled with heroin use and alcoholism in the past, as the former performer of "Bulimic" on The Used's self-titled album notes. However, he has since recovered from his heroin use, having been sober since 2012.
Bert McCracken has expressed his support for Palestine and left-wing politics, while simultaneously being skeptical of aspects of modern American culture and society, including the influence of multinational companies on the music industry, which partially prompted his move to Australia in 2013. In the lyrical content of The Used's 2014 album Imaginary Enemy, his political convictions were also influential.
About a year before the album of The Used's 2017 album The Canyon, McCracken's friend Tregen died by suicide, which heavily influenced the album's lyrical content.
Career
Quinn remembered Bert and was invited to try out in January 2001, when the band called Dumb Luck (which later became The Used, then consisting of Quinn, Jeph, and Branden) were looking for a musician. Bert wrote the lyrics to "Maybe Memories" after being given music by the band, and returned the next day with a newly recorded version of the song. Straight away, the band welcomed him and renamed themselves "Used." They were eventually discovered by John Feldmann and signed to Reprise Records, where they were named "The Used" after it was discovered that a Boston band had already trademarked the word "Used" in the media. They debuted their self-titled debut album on June 25, 2002.
