Bernie Marsden Career

Early career

Marsden formed Skinny Cat at the age of 17. He had been playing with local Buckingham based clubs.

In 1972, Marsden began working with UFO for his first commercial gig. He appeared in Glenn Cornick's Wild Turkey in 1973 before joining drummer Cozy Powell's band Cozy Powell's Hammer. Cozy Powell recommended him to Jon Lord, who was founding a post Deep Purple band with Ian Paice, Paice Ashton Lord, in 1975. He then joined Babe Ruth (1975) and Kid's Stuff (1976).

Marsden played on the Malice in Wonderland alongside Paice Ashton Lord, who recommended that Marsden join Paul McCartney's Wings, but the position never existed because Whitesnake was being established at the same time.

Solo career

During his time in Whitesnake, Marsden released two solo albums. Trash/Trio, Japan's first product, was introduced in 1979, and About Time Too became the country's number one export. EMI Records got the rights to the album and released it in Europe shortly before the 1981 debut of Marsden's second solo album, Look At Me Now. Both of these LPs were on the Parlophone brand at the time; only Marsden and The Beatles were on the label at the time. These included David Coverdale and Toto drummer Simon Phillips, who were in the audience on Friday Rock Show solo sessions. Before the introduction of his Green and Blues in 1994, no more solo albums appeared. This album is his tribute to guitarists in John Mayall's Bluesbreakers who allowed him to thank Eric Clapton, Peter Green, and Mick Taylor, but most importantly John Mayall.

Marsden released two soundtrack CDs; his music has appeared in numerous US television shows.

He made his own documentary blues-based DVD, which was shot in Mississippi. It's focusing on the Clarksdale area, it includes some wonderful tales and performances, especially with James 'Super Chikan' Johnson, Morgan Freeman, and dancing in the Ground Zero Club in Clarksdale as Marsden performs with his band. Larry Johnson's continuing obsession with blues led to him producing his own Blues From Harlem CD and developing close friendships with Honey Boy Edwards, John Jackson, and Louisiana Red, who played with both of them.

He produced Stacks, Jimmy Copley, Big Boy Blue Live, and Bernie Plays Rory, a double CD of Rory Gallagher's work in the 2000s. At The Radcliffe Centre in Buckingham, a live acoustic recording called Going To My Hometown was shot. Blues and Scales, Castle Communications' definitive compilation double CD, features songs from almost all of his favorite bands.

He performed guitar with Elkie Brooks, a singer he long admired; with The National Theatre with John Coghlan; worked with Sir Nicholas Hytner; and performed with Warren Haynes of the Allman Brothers Band; and appeared on stage at the Beacon Theatre in New York. Playing guitar in the Ringo Starr Band was a personal highlight of his long career; he appeared in Monaco and in the United Kingdom.

Bernie Marsden co-founded Conquest Music to release his next solo album, "Kings," honoring Albert King, Freddie King, and BB King. In the UK album sales chart, "Kings" debuted at #18 and was quickly followed by the debut of "Chess," a tribute to the legendary Chicago based Chess brand.

"Trios" was Bernie Marsden's next solo release in 2022. Trios is Bernie's tribute to the great power trios who inspired and inspired his musical style and taste, as part of Bernie's Inspirations Collection. Beck, Green, Walsh, Hendrix, Clapton, Trower, Gallagher, and others are among the guitarists who have been given the nod of permission in this set.

Marsden's name is added to this list as Bernie revisits a track with the great Cozy Powell from 1974, Na, Na, Na.
