Early life
Tipene was born in Auckland in 1990. In 2007, he and his classmates at Freyberg High School formed The Nerines, an indie rock band that went on to become a common fixture on Palmerston North's live music scene. The band received a Future Recording Artist award for participating in the SmokefreeRockquest competition. Tipene returned to New Zealand and began playing acoustic songs and embarked on a tour of flats in Palmerston North after switching from electric to acoustic guitar while on vacation in Europe. Tipene also recorded demos and albums that were released on Bandcamp. Tipene lived off music, working one day a week at a Palmerston North musical instrument store, and playing Saturday night at a Sunday cafe.
