Ben Sidran Career

Life and career

He was born in Chicago, Illinois, United States. Sidran was born in Racine, Wisconsin, and attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1961, where he became a member of The Ardells with Steve Miller and Boz Scaggs. Sidran stayed behind to study English literature when Miller and Scaggs left Wisconsin for the West Coast. He began studying at the University of Sussex, England, in 1966, and wanted to pursue a PhD. He appeared on Eric Clapton, The Rolling Stones, Peter Frampton, and Charlie Watts while living in England.

Sidran joined Steve Miller on recording projects, appearing on Brave New World, Your Saving Grace, Number 5, and Recall the Beginning...A Journey from Eden. He created Recall the Beginning and co-wrote the hit song "Space Cowboy." Born 2B Blue, Miller's 1988 jazz album, was released. Mose Allison, Van Morrison, Rickie Lee Jones, and Diana Ross have all recorded albums.

Sidran moved to Madison, Wisconsin, in 1971, and has spent the majority of his life there. He taught courses at the University (on the art of music) and hosted jazz radio programs for NPR (including the Peabody Award-winning Jazz Alive series) and television shows for VH1 beginning in 1981 (where his New Visions collection in the early 1990s captured the Ace Award). Sidran often expressed his desire to "demystify jazz; jazz players are just like the rest of us, only better."

He has released over 35 solo albums as a guitarist and a producer.

His published works include: Black Talk about black music in America; A Life in the Music, a series of his life in jazz; and The Ballad of Tommy LiPuma, a tribute to jazz producer Tommy LiPuma, a book reviewer published in 2005.

Talking Jazz includes an 80-page booklet with essays from writers, reviewers, and photographers, as well as 24 compact discs containing interviews with 60 jazz musicians from Sidran's award-winning NPR program Sidran on Record. The 24 CDs, arranged by Sidran, capture jazz singers from Miles Davis, Art Blakey, and others' voices.

In connection with his commentary while playing jazz, Sidran has been referred to by the Chicago Sun Times as a "Renaissance man cast adrift in a modern age" and "the first existential jazz rapper."

Sidran's complete collection, live gigs, films, lectures, and writings can be found on line.
