Born 3 April 1969, Paul Benjamin Mendelsohn (born 3 April 1969) is an Australian actor best known for his role in The Year My Voice Broke (1987) and internationally for his role in the crime drama Animal Kingdom (2010). Since then, he has appeared in films including The Dark Knight Rises (2012), Started Up (2013), Mississippi Grind (2015), Rogue One (2016), Ready Player One (2018), and Steven Spielberg's Ready Player One (2018).

Talos in Captain Marvel (2019) and Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019). Mendelsohn appeared in Netflix's original series Bloodline (2015-2017), for which he was nominated by the Golden Globe Award and received a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.

Early life and family

Mendelsohn was born in Melbourne, Victoria, and the son of Carole Ann (née Ferguson) and Frederick Arthur Mendelsohn. His father, a Melbourne medical researcher, once headed the Howard Florey Institute, where he currently holds the rank of Professor Emeritus. While Ben and his two brothers, Tom and David, as well as his mother (deceased), lived in Europe and the United States for lengthy stretches of time and returned to Melbourne when he was in high school. He attended Mercersburg Academy in the United States before attending Heidelberg Primary School and Eltham High School and Banyule High (now Viewbank College). Emma Forrest, a British-American journalist, married Mendelsohn in June 2012. He has a daughter with Forrest, born in 2014, and another daughter from a previous marriage, who is also an actor. In 2016, he and Forrest divorced.

Career

He attracted attention in his breakout film, The Year My Voice Broke (1987), where he received the Australian Film Institute Award for Best Supporting Actor after several early television performances, including The Henderson Kids alongside Kylie Minogue. His next big role was in The Big Steal (1990) and Spotswood (1992), co-starring Anthony Hopkins; this was followed by Metal Skin in 1994 and 1996 by Cosi and Idot Box; Cosi and Idiot Box. He appeared in two contrasting films, the Australian Mullet and the Hollywood Vertical Limitation, in 2000.

In 2005, he was preparing to appear Mark Antony in the Sydney Theatre Company-produced Julius Caesar, and he appeared in Terrence Malick-directed film The New World.

Mendelsohn appeared in the second (2006) and third (2006) seasons of Love My Way, and in 2008, he appeared in Baz Luhrmann's Australia. He appeared in the first season of Melbourne's Tangle TV series Tangle, which premiered on Showcase in 2009. He appeared in Alex Proyas' American science fiction film Knowing in 2009. Mendelsohn appeared in Beautiful Kate, directed by Rachel Ward, opposite Bryan Brown and Rachel Griffiths.

He appeared in Animal Kingdom in the film as Andrew "Pope" Cody, a criminal on the run from the law in Melbourne's notorious Underworld. During Australian singer Sia's Nostalgic For the Present concert tour in 2016, he appeared on stage as an onstage "stand-in" for her song "Breathe Me."

In Rogue One, the Star Wars franchise's Director Krennic played him. "It's a childhood dream come true" for him to be in a Star Wars film. In 2018, Nolan Sorrento appeared in Steven Spielberg's science fiction film Ready Player One, a few years later. He appeared in The Land of Steady Habits, a film from 2018. Samuel L. Jackson and Brie Larson appeared in Talos in Marvel's film Captain Marvel. He reprised his role in Spider-Man: Far From Home, as well as in 2019.

Mendelsohn appeared in the lead role in the HBO crime miniseries The Outsider, which premiered in 2020. It was revealed in December 2020 that he and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, as Talos, will be reprising his role as Talos in the forthcoming Disney+ series Secret Invasion.
