Ben Chaplin (born Benedict John Greenwood; 31 July 1969) is an English actor, producer, and writer.

Early life

Chaplin was born in Windsor, England, on July 31, 1969, the son of Cynthia (née Chaplin), a tutor) and Peter Greenwood CBE, a civil engineer. Rachel is his sister, and Justin has one brother.

After appearing in a dramatic performance in his school years at the Princess Margaret Royal Free School, Chaplin became interested in acting as a teenager. He enrolled at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London at the age of seventeen. He started his acting career in odd jobs as an office employee and then spent a while as a statistician with the London Transport Authority.

Chaplin began his professional career in BBC television dramas in bit parts and occasional cinema films, borrowing his stage name from his mother's maiden name. He appeared in his first major role in 1992, costarring Jason Flemyng in Bye Byee Baby for Channel Four. In The Remains of the Day, James Ivory and Ismail Merchant portrayed him as a servant; he appeared in Between the Lines, episode 1 in 1992; and as the socially inept Con Wainwright in the Feast of July (1995). Chaplin was nominated for an Olivier award (1995) in London and played Matthew in the first series of the British sitcom Game On (BBC Two, 1995), but was eventually dropped after one series. For the final two series, Neil Stuke appeared in the same role.
