Jay Foreman
Beardyman Life

Darren Foreman (born 14 May 1982), also known as Beardyman, is a British multivocalist, singer, and actor best known for his live looping and beatboxing.

Early life

Foreman, a pupil at Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School for Boys in Barnet, Barnet, migrated to Brighton in 2001 to study at the University of Sussex. Despite making noises at the age of three by imitating Michael Winslow from the Police Academy movie series, it was seeing Rahzel live that convinced Foreman that beatboxing could be more than simply give interludes within the context of a larger story. At the age of ten, Beardyman's first musical venture was to compose a symphony for his school orchestra. An introduction to drum and bass at fifteen sparked his long-awaited interest in music technology. Darren was given the nickname "beardyman" because a name was quickly needed for a flyer in an early display, and he had a beard at the time.

He is the brother of comedian and YouTuber Jay Foreman, with whom he also performs onstage.

Beardyman Career

Career

In 2006, Beardyman defeated David Lloyd to win the UK Beatbox Champion and defended his position in 2007, making him the first beatboxer in the United Kingdom to win two championships in a row. He was on the 2008 judging committee.

Beardyman, a versatile solo beatboxer in the modern age, was inspired by MC Xander to loop and sample his vocals by using music devices such as the Korg Kaoss Pad 3. He effectively produces complete DJ sets via live broadcasting—both covers of well-known hits and his own original material) are created live from his vocalizations.

His music often includes elements of drum and bass, dubstep, breakbeat, trance, techno, and other common forms of experimental dance music. He also incorporates other genres of music into his live sets, including but not limited to reggae and country music, often for the purpose of providing a comedic counterpoint to his beatboxing. Virtually all of his music is produced using only his mouth and vocal cords to produce sounds, and by using music technologies such as vocoders and software synthesis to change his voice's pitch or add various types of audio effects such as delays, reverbs, or modulation effects, his voice can be generated. Multiple pieces of electronic equipment can be seen in various YouTube videos, including the Korg Kaossilator Pro (also known as the KP3)), a Korg Wavedrum, a microKORG, a Boss GT-8, and a Boss RC-50.

Beardyman's debut album I Done a Album was released on March 21, 2011. It was a departure from his previous live performances.

He has foregone the use of Kaoss Pads in favour of proprietary applications he has been designing, the Beardytron 5000 MkIII. "I have been working on the device for the past three years, assisting its installation and testing, as well as designing and describing it." I had no choice but to install new off the shelf gear, existing apps, or even cobbled together patches using freeware. The system is essentially my life's work and will continue to be what I use for all my future endeavors. The Beardytron 5000 mkII is a work in progress, and at some point you'll be able to buy some sort of looper/production-system based on the latest advances that have been used to make my shows possible."

"The system is designed from the ground up in C++ and Objective-C by Dave Gamble of DMGAudio and employs 15 cases and counting for a partially custom built-into-effect 'Turnado', a remarkable linear-8-way-engine controlled multi-effects. Along with Rob Papen's postponement, the guitar rig is also used. The device is managed by two iPads running custom applications on a specially designed high-reconnecting protocol.

Beardyman performed in Pune, India, on November 29, 2012, the first live gig to exclusively use the Beardytron 5000 MkII. The Beardytron 5000 MkII software will be available for purchase by the public sometime in 2014. Beardyman delivered a talk at a TED conference on February 28, 2013, an 11-minute preview and a demonstration of the Beardytron 5000 MkII. He gives an example of some of the sounds he can make from only his vocal cords, including screaming babies, vinyl record scratching, buzzing flies, overtone singing, various animals, a didgeridoo, and beatboxing before demonstrating the Beardytron 5000. Despite his ability to produce sounds, the human voice is nevertheless limited by its physical and biological characteristics. His invention is described as a real-time music production machine by the composer. "It helps me to make music in real time as I hear it in my head, unimpeded by any physical restrictions my body places on me." On August 2, 2013, the video was posted on the TED.com website, the TEDTalks YouTube channel, and Beardyman's website.

His interest in discovering new musical technologies is also evident in his lively Battlejam club nights, which he co-hosts with 2007 DMC champion turntablist JFB. Live looping technology is enhanced with live sampling of the audience to make the hook of instantly composed songs and even live video sampling and scratching.

He has performed and recorded with MC Klumzy Tung as part of the MC/beatbox duo The Gobfathers. They appeared in 'The Freestyle Showdown,' on television in 2005, and then in a hidden camera show on E4.

He coproduced Monkey Jazz, a multimedia film that focuses on the live looping process that has over 1 million views on YouTube in 2008. Since then, they have collaborated together to produce various multi-camera videos of Beardyman's performances, filmed at the Cube Microplex. With mr_hopkinson, providing visual backdrops from images downloaded from the internet in reaction to audience suggestions at Just for Laughs, Montreal and Edinburgh Fringe international comedy festivals, crowdsourcing and manipulating images live from the internet in reaction to audience inquiries.

Beardyman was hired in 2010 to produce a promotional video for Dolby Mobile, a smartphone surround sound chip. He produced and performed the YouTube video DOLBYMAN, displaying a variety of genres to highlight the chip's abilities.

Beardymans often incorporates humour into his routine. On stage at Bestival, he impersonated Elvis, dressed as a monkey, and "Professor Bernhard Steinerhoff" posed as an Austrian climate change lecturer before breaking into his set with over 2 million views on YouTube. He also appears in the Funky Sage ring tones, in which he plays a floating head who beatboxes and gives good advice. More than 5 million views have been watched on YouTube, including his video "Kitchen Diaries" which features him combining beatboxing with cooking. In South Coast, a Brighton-based documentary about hip hop in the United Kingdom, "Kitchen Diaries" also appears.

Beardyman is known for his diverse vocal styles, which include beatboxing, singing, rapping, overtone singing, scat singing, instrument/sound mimicry, and voice impressions.

Since 2010, Darren has been speaking at Love Monster on the CBeebies.

Young Voices, a series of children's choir charity concerts performed in Manchester, Birmingham, London, and Belfast, during November 2006.

He appeared on the second episode of BBC One's When Will I Be Famous on February 10, 2007. Despite winning over the studio audience and two of the three judges, he came second in a public election. He appeared on both Channel 4 and Homemade on the same day, where he was also known as the oddest beatboxer around. On their UK tour in 2007, Beardyman supported Groove Armada.

He appeared at the Udderbelly during the London residency of the South Bank. This was for an ensemble comedy performance called "Beardyman's Complete and Utter Shambles" starring JFB, MC Klumzy Tung, Beardyman's comedian brother Jay Foreman, guitarist mr_hopkinson, and comedian Reggie Watts. The show brought Battlejam's technology-based entertainment experiments to a more theatrical comedy club setting. "Beardyman's Unplanned Explosion" on a reduced cast version of the Edinburgh Festival and then again in October 2009 at Bristol Old Vic.

Tim Minchin appeared in the BBC Comedy Prom 2011 with Beardyman.
