Personal life
Edward Michael Grylls was born in London on June 7th, 1974. Both first-class cricketers came from a family with strong cricketing history, Neville Ford, his grandfather, and great-grandfather William Augustus Ford. He grew up in Donaghadee, Northern Ireland, until the age of four, when his family moved to Bembridge on the Isle of Wight.
He is the son of Conservative politician Sir Michael Grylls and his wife Sarah "Sally" (née Ford). Grylls' older sibling, Lara Fawcett, who gave him the nickname 'Bear' when he was a week old, has one sibling, Lara Fawcett.
He learned to climb and sail with his father, who was a member of the prestigious Royal Yacht Squadron, from an early age. He learned to skydive as a youth and earned his second dan black belt in Shotokan karate. He speaks in English, Spanish, and French. He is an Anglican, and he has described his Christian faith as the "backbone" in his life: "You can't keep God out." We're all around us, if we're just as keen as to listen."

Grylls' 11-year-old son Jesse was abandoned on Saint Tudwal's Island off the coast of North Wales in August 2015 as the tide approached, causing him to be rescued by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) as part of their weekly practice missions. Jesse was unharmed, but the Royal National Institute later chastised him for the stunt, saying that the crew "had not understood" that a child would be involved.

Grylls was educated at Eaton House, Ludgrove School, and Eton College, where he helped start the nation's first mountaineering club. He studied Spanish and German at the University of the West of England, Bristol, and Birkbeck College, where he graduated with a 2:12 bachelor's degree obtained part-time in Hispanic studies in 2002.

Facing Up (UK)/The Kid Who Climbed Everest (US) Grylls' first book, The Kid Who Climbed Everest (US) a memoir about his expedition and triumphs in scaling Mount Everest's summit.
