Early life
Barkhad Abdi was born in Mogadish, Somalia, on April 10, 1985. He and his family travelled to Yemen around the age of six or seven, when the Somali Civil War broke out, to help his father, who had taken up teaching. In 1999, Abdi and his family migrated to Minneapolis, Minnesota, where there is a large Somali population. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in 2003 and then attended Minnesota State University Moorhead. The word Barkhad in Somali means literally cistern, with water representing life. Abdi sold cellphones at his brother's store in Minneapolis before starting to film. He also worked as a chauffeur for a family's limousine business and as a DJ.

More than 700 candidates were then selected from more than 700 people in a 2011 casting call in Minneapolis, and Abdi and three other actors were then selected from among more than 700 participants. The four were chosen "the chosen ones, that ostensible group that stuck out," according to the casting director. After being paid $65,000 for his participation in the film and then returning to work in his brother's store afterwards, he was paid $65,000.
