He began his musical career as a frontman and innovator of Rivermaya, and then fronted his own band, Bamboo.

In 2011, the bamboo band disbanded, but Maválac pursued a solo career and released his first solo album, No Water, No Moon. Malac was known for his vocals, which blend a rock style with a mellow approach; he also had a vivacious presence in live performances;

His musical and vocal abilities, as well as his band's polished sound, have made him a rock icon in the Philippines.

Early life

Maalac was born in Quezon City, Philippines, to Filipino parents. When he was ten years old, his family immigrated to San Francisco, California, where the majority of his childhood was spent. Bamboo Manalac Career

Career

Rivermaya's roots came from a band named Xaga, which included Jesse Gonzales on vocals, Kenneth Ilagan on guitars, Nathan Azarcon on bass guitar, Rome Velayo on drums, and Rico Blanco on keyboards and backing vocals. Lizza Nakpil and director Chito S. Roo took over the band. In the process of exhausting practice sessions, Azarcon's former schoolmate, Mark Escueta, and Azarcon's childhood friend, Mark Escueta, were all replaced by Gonzales, and later, Ilagan was replaced by Perf de Castro. The band members themselves decided to abandon Xaga and form the band Rivermaya with Maalac as the frontman. In demo form for prospective recording companies, they began assembling original songs like "Ulan," "214," and "Awit ng Kabataan." Since its inception, the band has released many hit albums, received numerous accolades, and appeared in numerous successful concerts and tours.

Maalac decided to leave the band and stay with his family in the United States following the band's success in the United States and Canada tours. He appeared with the band in Oakland, CA, on October 10, 1998. Despite widespread belief and rumors that he was booted from the company due to heroin use, Maalac denied this as a mere "fan theory" and claimed that he did not smoke and never tried opioids ever since, despite widespread belief and rumors. He went back to school in San Francisco and Los Angeles, took up English, philosophy, and Film, which were his majors, and worked in various odd jobs.

Maalac returned to the Philippines in 2002 after living in Los Angeles following the Rivermaya tour in America. Ira Cruz and Vic Mercado met his ex bandmate in Rivermaya, Nathan Azarcon. Later, the three of them banded together and formed the Bamboo band Bamboo. Since then, the band has released four hit records and received numerous accolades.

After KC Montero announced on Twitter that the band had canceled on Twitter, rumors began to circulate on January 10, 2011. Malac issued a formal statement on January 11, 2011, according to the band's official website.

He said:

Malac's solo debut album, No Water, No Moon, was released in November 2011 under the name Polyeast Records. As the carrier single, the album features 12 tracks with "Questions" as the carrier single. After selling more than 7,500 copies, the album reached its gold record in February 2013.

Maalac performed as a mainstay cast member and a performer on the show in January 2012.

Bamboo Maalac speculated on February 10, 2013 when he appeared on Sarah Geronimo's last episode, after they both completed a production number together on a specific date. ABS-CBN aired a promotional plug during the airtime of Kahit Konting Pagtingin's pre-primetime television drama that made headlines on February 14, 2013 announcing Bamboo Malac's stint as both coach and judge in The Voice of the Philippines. "I'm eager to be a coach" in a CNN News interview, Maalac said about his stay on the show. Everybody needs a time for everything, and this is it. When asked what kind of musician he would like to mentor, he replied, "I've been listening to rock for a long time, but I also listen to other genres, ranging from rock to pop to folk to everything." I like someone who is open to all sorts of music; someone who is able to listen and eager to learn."

Bamboo, Lea Salonga, and Sarah Geronimo have served as mentors for The Voice Kids Philippines from 2014 to present.

Bamboo's second solo album, Bless this Mess, was released in October 2015, four years since the initial appearance of his first album. In Grand Street Recording Studio, Brooklyn, New York, the 10-track album was recorded.
