Balys Sruoga Life

Balys Sruoga (February 2, 1896, Baibokai, Kovno Governorate) was a Lithuanian poet, playwright, scholar, and literary theorist.

Early life

He began contributing to cultural journals from his youth. His books were published in various Lithuanian newspapers and other magazines (such as Aurin, Rygos naujienos, etc.). He began studying literature in Saint Petersburg in 1914 and then in Moscow, Russia, due to World War I and the Russian Revolution. He enrolled in 1921 at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, where he obtained his Ph.D. for a doctoral dissertation on Lithuanian folklore in 1924.

Sruoga stayed at the University of Lithuania and founded a theatre academy that later became a course of study. He has also written several books on literature. He began writing dramas in 1930, first Milibro paunksm, later Radvila Perknas, Baisioji naktis, and Aitvaras teis jas. He began teaching at Vilnius University in 1939. Sruoga wrote a pro-Sovie cantata congratulating the new Soviet government after Lithuania's Soviet annexation by the Soviet Union.

Later life

Sruoga was held in the same camp after the Soviets liberated the Nazi camps. However, in 1945, he returned to Vilnius and continued teaching at Vilnius University, where he wrote the dramas Pajrio kurortas and Barbora Radvilaita.

Forest of The Gods was unable to be published by the authorities, and poor health as a result of his time in concentration camps led to his death in October 16, 1947 (he died going back from Kaunas to Vilnius due to a cold). The book Forest of the Gods, a 2005 film, was based on the novel.
