August Gailit (9 January 1891 – 5 November 1960) was an Estonian writer.

Life

Georg August Gailit was born in Kuiksilit (near Sangaste Castle), Sangaste Parish (now Otepää Parish), Kreis Dorpat, Governor of Livonia, was the son of a carpenter and grew up on a farm in Laatre. He attended schools in the parish and town of Valga from 1905, 1905, and then in 1907 a municipal school in Tartu. From 1911 to 1914, he worked as a journalist in today's Latvia and Estonia. He served as a war correspondent in Estonia's War of Independence. Gailit lived in Germany, France, and Italy from 1922 to 1924. Since then, he worked as a freelance writer in Tartu and Tallinn, 1934. He was the director of Teatre Vanemuine in Tartu from 1932 to 1934. Gailit married Elvi Vapour-Nander (1898-1981) in 1932, and his daughter Aili-Viktooria was born in 1933. Gailit and his family escaped to Sweden in September 1944, where he worked as a writer during Soviet occupation of Estonia. They lived in Ormesta's manor house near rebro. He died on 5 November 1960 and was buried in the rebro northern cemetery.

Literary career

In 1917, Gailit and some other writers and writers formed "Siuru" in the midst of a controversy. Marie Under, Henrik Visnapuu, Johannes Semper, Peet Aren, Friedebert Tuglas, and Artur Adson were among the group's members. The early prose of Gailit also had sexual content and satire. Gailit was heavily influenced by neo-romanticism up until the 1920s. Both Oswald Spengler and Knut Hamsun exercised a great deal of influence in his work. Toomas Nipernaadi (which was turned into a film in 1983) focuses on a vain vain's romantic and thrilling life. Some of his books dealt with political topics, including the novel Isade maa (1935), which explored the Estonian 1918–20 war of independence. The book Üle rahutu vee, published in Gothenburg, Sweden, worries about the sad event of having to leave one's country.
