At the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater, she began performing improv and sketch comedy.

Parks and Recreation, an NBC sitcom, earned her even more for her role as April Ludgate (2009–2015).

Plaza appeared in the FX drama series Legion from 2017 to 2019. Plaza had her first leading role in the comedy Safety Not Guaranteed (2012) after many supporting roles in various films.

She has appeared in the films Mystery Team (2008), Funny People (2009), Scott Pilgrim vs.

The World (2010), Monsters University (2013), Life After Beth (2014), Dirty Grandpa (2016), Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates (2017), The Little Hours West (2017), An Evening with Beverly Luff Linn (2018) and Child's Play (2019).

Early life and education

Plaza was born in Wilmington, Delaware, to Bernadette, an advocate, and David Plaza, a financial advisor. Renee and Natalie are her two younger sisters.

Bread's "Aubrey" was named after the band "Aubrey" was played on the piano. Her father is of Puerto Rican descent; her paternal grandfather Ismael was born in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, and moved to the mainland United States when he was 17 years old. Her mother is of both Irish and English descent. She has also stated that she has Tanui ancestry.

Plaza said: "I was like the only privileged kid in my high school, and I'm half-Puerto Rican." Well, I have a large family and a slew of cousins in Puerto Rico, but "I have a big family and a lot of cousins." Growing up "very Catholic" in a Catholic household, she said the combination of that and movies is her "favorite thing ever" in her thoughts about her love of Christmas and movies. In 2002, she graduated from Ursuline Academy, an all-girls Catholic academy. She was president of the Wilmington Drama League and was active in student productions. She studied film at the Tisch School of the Arts in New York University, graduating in 2006.

Plaza died of a stroke when she was 20 years old that caused temporary paralysis and expressive aphasia. When walking the set of Parks and Recreation, she had a brief ischemic attack a few years later.

Personal life

Since 2011, Plaza has been in a relationship with writer and director Jeff Baena. Plaza revealed in an Instagram post in May 2021 that she and Baena are engaged, referring to him as "my darling husband."

"Girls are into me," she said in a 2016 interview with The Advocate. That's no surprise. Hey, I'm into them as well. I fall in love with both girls and guys. "I can't help it."
