Early life
Strid Bergès-Frisbey was born in Barcelona, Spain, to a Spanish father and a French-American mother. She is the oldest of three children. Following her parents' divorce when she was two years old, she moved to southwestern France when she was 5. She was born in a small town near La Rochelle, where she worked in school as a hobby, but never imagined acting as a career path because the countryside where she lived was so different from the movie industry; it was something abstract. Her father later moved to the Dominican Republic, where she spent five summers as a waitress. She moved to Paris by herself to pursue a career in osteopathy, but she found herself wandering around a lot, without knowing anyone in the region. Her father died at the age of 46 just short of 67. She explains that her life is too short and that her true intention was acting due to the incident. She went straight to drama school after graduation. She is fluent in Catalan, Spanish, French, and Italian. For her role as Princesses of the Caribbean, she began learning English.
Career
She made her acting debut on French television in 2007. She made her debut in the film The Sea Wall in 2008. She began modelling in 2010 and was fronting the French Connection's spring/summer and winter/winter campaigns.
After a whirlwind of auditions in France, Hollywood, and the United Kingdom, Bergès-Frisbey made her English-language debut in 2011 Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, gaining the role of the mermaid Syrena. For the job, she had to learn to speak English. She was forbidden from going out in daylight to keep her skin pale during filming in Hawaii.
Bergès-Frisbey appeared in El sexo de los ángelles, a Spanish film that was released in 2012. Juliette, the coming-of-age French film Juliette (2013), was her titular role for the following year. Sofi was also in her second English-speaking feature film after that.
She learned to speak Italian for the film Alaska (2015), earning her a nomination for Best Actress by David di Donatello. She appeared in King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, a supporting role. For her appearance in L'Autre in 2020, she received the award for Best Actress at the Taormina Film Fest.
