Ashutosh Gowariker Career

Career

Gowariker began his career as an actor, making his debut in 1984 in director Ketan Mehta's film Holi. Gowariker met Aamir Khan on the Holi sets, with whom he went on to collaborate years later. He appeared in numerous television serials, including Kacchi Dhoop (1987), Circus (1989), C.I.D. (1998) and several films, including Naam (1986), Chamatkar (1992), and Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa (1993).

He made his directorial debut with Pehla Nasha in 1993. Aamir Khan appeared in his second film Baazi (1995).

Gowariker wrote and directed the period epic film Lagaan, which was directed by and starring Aamir Khan. In the late 19th century, Lagaan told the tale of a cricket match between British officers and Indian villagers. In terms of gross sales, it ranked third among 2001's Indian movies in terms of total revenue.

Aamir had stopped the film within 5 minutes of narration and told Gowariker that it was a strange one. "I've always debuffed Lagaan's narration in five minutes." I was like this is a tale of people who are unable to pay lagaan because there are no rains and they play cricket with British people. I was like, 'What a strange thought is this!' I told Ashutosh, "This is a strange tale." In a 2018 interview, Aamir told Pinkvilla, "I told him to get me a different story."

Gowariker returned to Aamir after three months, this time with a complete script. Aamir was furious that Gowariker kept working on it and rejected the film for the second time. "But when I heard the tale, I was hooked." I adored Lagaan's last script and found it amazing. "I told him, "It is a fantastic script and it does smash the record of mainstream cinema." I'm afraid to say no, but I'm afraid to say no. He had said, "I can't do it";

They were moved to tears as Gowariker narrated the tale to Aamir's parents later and told him not to make the film.

Lagaan is set in 1893, during the late Victorian period of India's colonial British Raj. The tale revolves around a small village in Central India, whose people are weighed down by high taxes, face a challenge to play a cricket match against a team of British officers. If they win the game, their taxes will be refunded, but failing to win would mean paying triple taxes.

Gowariker produced Swades in 2004, starring Shahrukh Khan.

Jodhaa Akbar (2008), another historical epic romance set in the 16th century, starred Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai.

What Is Your Raashee, Gowariker's romantic comedy What is Your Raashee? In 2009, Priyanka Chopra appeared in 12 films as well as Harman Baweja.

Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey's (2010) book about the Chittagong Uprising set in undivided Bengal of 1930 starred Abhishek Bachchan and Deepika Padukone.

Gowariker produced the film Mohenjo Daro, which starred Hrithik Roshan in 2016. He returned to acting by playing the lead role in the critically acclaimed comedy drama Ventilator (2016), which was directed by Priyanka Chopra. According to reports, he took about six months to decide to film.
