Engineer was born partially deaf in British Columbia, Canada, on March 6, 2001.
She was first discovered in 2007 when she was spotted using sign language with her mother. BRENDA Campbell, a neighbor who learned she was an agent, recommended Aryana for the role of five-year-old Maxine "Max" Coleman in the film Orphanage (2009). The neighbor knew the producers were looking for a blond-haired girl who knew how to sign and decided to take action. Max Coleman's script was described as "unimaginably cute." When director Collet-Serra learned that Aryana had the ability to perform a scene "while weeping," she knew she was the one for the role. Aryana didn't know what was going on during Orphanage's construction and thought it was all a game, according to Collet-Serra.
Aryana appeared in a commercial for the 2010 Winter Olympics, which were being held in Canada, following Orphanage's debut. She and her brother were also represented in Canada at the 2010 Winter Paralympics opening ceremony, embracing viewers with sign language.
