Aruna Asaf Ali Life

Aruna Asaf Ali (née Ganguly, 1909-1991) was an Indian educator, political reformer, and publisher.

She is best remembered for hoisting the Indian National flag at the Gowalia Tank maidan in Bombay during a Quit India Movement in 1942.

Since being born post-independence, she remained involved in politics, becoming Delhi's first mayor.

Early life

Aruna Asaf Ali was born in Kalka, Punjab, British India, on July 16th, 1909 (now in Haryana, India) into a Bengali Brahmin family. Upendranath Ganguly's father was a student in Eastern Bengal (now Bangladesh), but she migrated to the United Province. He was a restauranteur who ran a successful business. Ambalika Devi, a well-known Brahmo king who wrote many Brahmo hymns, was the daughter of Trailokyanath Sanyal, a popular Brahmo figure who wrote many Brahmo hymns. Dhirendranath Ganguly (DG), Upendranath Ganguly's younger brother, was one of the first film directors. Nagendranath, brother of Nobel Prize Laureate Rabindranath Tagore's only living daughter, Mira Devi, was a scholar at the University of Nagendranath. Purnima Banerjee, the sister of Aruna, was a member of the Constituent Assembly of India.

Aruna was educated at Sacred Heart Convent in Lahore and then at All Saints' College in Nainital. She spent time as a Gokhale Memorial School teacher in Calcutta after her graduation. In Allahabad, she met Asaf Ali, a leader of the Congress party. They married in 1928, amid parental skepticism due to faith and age (he was a Muslim and her senior by more than 20 years).
