Arne Friedrich Career

Club career

Friedrich's first professional deal was signed in the 2000–01 season. When playing for regionalliga club SC Verl, Hermann Gerland, the head coach of Arminia Bielefeld at the time, scouted Friedrich. Gerland made a quick decision to bring Friedrich to Bielefeld, where he quickly became a regular starter.

Friedrich accepted an invitation from Hertha BSC in 2002. He won the DFB-Ligapokal last year with the Berlin club, defeating Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, and Schalke 04.

Falko Götz was appointed captain by Robert Schubert in 2004, 2005–05, a position he held for the remainder of his time in Hertha. He renewed his Hertha deal twice, which was set to end in 2012 with a performance-based option for an additional year. He appeared in 231 games for the club from the capital in the German top flight.

However, after Hertha's relegation in 2010, Friedrich left the club for VfL Wolfsburg in a €2 million transfer, ending in a three-year contract.

He was forced to leave Wolfsburg due to a long-term injury on September 19th.

Friedrich was signed by the Chicago Fire of Major League Soccer in March 2012. In a match against the Houston Dynamo on April 16, 2012, he made his competitive debut for the club. The game ended in a 1–1 draw. In a match against Philadelphia Union, Friedrich scored his first MLS goal on August 12, 2012. Friedrich was named Defender of the Year by the club in 2012. He extended his Chicago Fire contract until the end of 2013 at the end of the 2012 season.

Friedrich became a permanent resident of the United States, which allowed him to no longer hold an international slot while playing for Major League Soccer clubs. Friedrich did not appear in any games in 2013 due to his regular injuries.

Friedrich resigned from professional football on June 23, 2013.

International career

Friedrich appeared in a total of five games for the Germany U-21 squad and once for the B-team known as "Team 2006."

He made his senior team debut against Bulgaria in a 2–2 draw in Sofia on August 21, 2002. His first major tournament for the national team was Euro 2004, where he appeared in all three group matches where the German team was disqualified. In a 5–1 friendly win over Thailand in Bangkok on December 21, Friedrich captained Germany. He has captained the team three times since.

In 2005, Germany qualified as the future World Cup hosts. Friedrich took turns with Andreas Hinkel on the right wing-back role. He was a member of the 23-man squad for the 2006 World Cup the previous year. Friedrich started all of Germany's games except the one for third place, which he missed due to an illness.

Friedrich was tornally a member of the German team at Euro 2008, but he was originally intended as a substitute. Marcell Jansen's knee injury started the final group game and all three knock-out stage matches. The quarter-final was one of Friedrich's best international competitions, where he effectively shut down Portugal's national team star Cristiano Ronaldo.

Joachim Löw, the German coach, said in March 2009 that he now thinks Friedrich Friedrich as a center-back rather than the right wing-back position.

Friedrich was part of Germany's squad at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. He scored his first international goal on his 77th appearance for Germany in the 2010 World Cup 4–0 quarter-final victory over Argentina, following Bastian Schweinsteiger's solo run.

Career as manager and executive

Friedrich was named as the new assistant coach of the German U18 national team on August 28, 2014. At the end of 2015, he resigned from the position.

Friedrich was hired as a performance manager at Hertha BSC under the supervision of Jürgen Klinsmann, who had been recruited earlier on the same day. Friedrich took over as sport director in summer 2020 after six months as performance manager. After manager Michael Preetz was dismissed in December, he was named interim managing director shortly thereafter. Friedrich returned to his role as interim managing director in July 2021 after a successful five months as interim managing director, while simultaneously being appointed to Hertha BSC's executive board.
