Ariyon Debo Bakare (born 1 July 1971) is a British actor.

He appeared in A Respectable Trade (1995), British soap opera Family Affairs from 2000 to 2001, and The BBC One daytime drama Doctors from 2001 to 2005.

Bakare appeared on British dramas The Bill, Casualty, and Holby City were among the topics discussed prior to this.

He appeared in the films After the Rain and The Secret Laughter of Women.

Early life

Bakare left his family home at the age of 15, and began his education while homeless due to his father's war. Years later, he returned home and "made peace" with his father. Bakare moved from London to New York in order to pursue dance as a career, and he worked as a dancer at numerous conservatories, including Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. He was told that dancers often retire at a young age, two years into his career. He gave up dancing and began focusing on acting the next day. At the age of 20, he returned to London and began studying acting at Drama Centre London. He began his career with the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC). He said he did live in Scotland, did scriptwriting, singing soul, and opera music while studying scriptwriting.

Bakare portrayed Ben Kwarme in the BBC soap opera Doctors from 2001 to 2005. He was rewarded for Best Actor at the 2004 British Soap Awards for his portrayal of the role. Bakare returned to direct and write multiple episodes after leaving Doctors. In the Channel drama Stealing Lives, he co-wrote and appeared. He appeared in November 2008 as a villain in the BBC drama Spooks, and in October 2009, he made a appearance in Casualty. In 2011, Bakare played Carl Lucas, a mini-cab driver, in the twelfth episode of Law & Order UK's sixth series, which premiered in 2012. Wesley Holt, a band manager, appeared on Dancing on the Edge for the first time in 2013. Bakare appeared in Doctor Who's "The Woman Who Lived" alongside Maisie Williams in 2015. He played Leandro, a lion-like creature. In Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, he appeared as a Rebel pilot. He debuted in 2019 as Lord Boreal in the BBC TV series Dark Materials.

Bakare's theatre credits include performances at the RSC and the Lyric Hammersmith. He was nominated for an Ian Charleson Award for the role of Florindo in Tim Supple's production of A Servant to Two Masters at the Young Vic Theatre. In the British premiere of Dream of the Dog, where he played a South African clad architect, "Look Smart."
