As writers across the country continue to put down their pen in the hopes of obtaining better wages and working conditions, decorated showrunner David Simon, 63, made the remarks during a sit-down with radio journalist Ari Shapiro on Friday. Simon wrote the Baltimore-set drama in 2002, gaining widespread fame and acclaim in the process. He's going to write for HBO for the next 21 years, but that will be postponed until May 8, when he was told his employment would be terminated. Simon explained the sudden nixing to his nearly 325,000 followers on social media, saying he's learned a lot from his earlier decision to stand in solidarity with picketers in LA, which he characterized as a'suspension.' The Baltimore news reporter-turned-TV writer lamented the changing landscape writers are currently confronted with in the emergence of streaming and apps touting artificial intelligence such as ChatGPT over the weekend, referring to Shapiro. When asked about the latter and its ability to solve problems that may arise during the writing process, Simon had a few key words to illustrate his position on the subject, saying, "I would rather have a gun in my mouth" rather than lean on such a device.
