Anwar El Ghazi Career

Club career

El Ghazi began his football career in the youth ranks of his hometown team BVV Barendrecht, before joining Feyenoord's youth academy for two seasons. He joined Sparta 2020 before being recruited to Sparta Rotterdam, where he progressed through the academy. He joined the Ajax Youth Academy in 2013 and competed in the UEFA Youth League for the first time.

El Ghazi was signed by Ajax in July 2013. In 150 minutes of playing time during the 2014–15 season, he scored 8 goals in 150 minutes, finishing as Ajax's best pre-season scorer. Although Ajax initially planned to send El Ghazi to their reserve team, Jong Ajax, El Ghazi's pre-season, prompted Ajax to keep him in the first-team squad after fellow winger Lesley de Sa to the Go Ahead Eagles. El Ghazi made his official debut for Ajax against PEC Zwolle in the 2014 Johan Cruyf Shield, defeating Riyna 1–0 at home.

In the 2014–15 Evince season opener against Vitesse, El Ghazi made his regular season debut for Ajax. The match concluded in a 4–1 home win, with El Ghazi assisting for Lasse Schöne's fourth goal in the 87th minute. El Ghazi scored in the 90th minute in the 3–1 away victory over AZ on August 17, 2014, scoring in the 90th minute. On October 22, 2014, he scored his first UEFA Champions League goal against Barcelona in the 88th minute of a 3–1 loss. In doing so, he became the first player to score at Camp Nou since the 2014–15 season, when Barcelona went five matches at home without conceding a single goal.

El Ghazi had been sold to French Ligue 1 side Lille for a €8 million transfer fee on January 31, 2017. He scored his first goal for Lille against Caen on February 18th, making the game also a winner (0–1).

El Ghazi scored Lille's third goal against Nantes on August 6, 2017 on the first matchday of the 2017-18 season. He took off his shirt to reveal a shirt in honor of Abdelhak Nouri, his former Ajax teammate who had collapsed and sustained a cardiac arrest, leaving him with severe and permanent brain damage and unable to continue as a footballer. In 27 appearances, El Ghazi scored four goals and two assists during the 2017–18 season. During his match against RC Strasbourg on January 28, the Dutch striker highlighted himself in particular, scoring the first goal, a header, after Nicolas Pépé's assist. He then provided an assist for the Edgar Ié, completing Lille's victory.

El Ghazi sustained a hamstring injury against Lyon on February 18, 2018 and was sidelined for several weeks. Due to delays, he did not return until the end of the season, where he had trouble establishing himself in head coach Christophe Galtier's starting lineup.

El Ghazi signed for Aston Villa in a season-long loan, with a provision to buy included. He made his Reading debut on August 25th in a 1–1 draw, with Reading providing an assist, and Ahmed Elmohamady, who scored a header, made the ball crossing the ball.

El Ghazi was mistakenly presented with a red card by referee Stuart Attwell on 28 April 29, a fierce match between Aston Villa and Championship playoff rivals Leeds United. Following Mateusz Klich's controversial 72nd opener for Leeds United following Tyler Roberts' refusal to put the ball out of touch for an injury, El Ghazi reportedly struck Leeds forward Patrick Bamford during an on-pit brawl. Fans and pundits alike expressed displeasure with the decision, with Aston Villa head coach Dean Smith claiming that if the red card and subsequent three-game suspension weren't reversed after appeal, he'd be 'amazed'. The red card and ban were both withdrawn, and Bamford was banned from two games on May 2nd for "successful deception of a match official."

El Ghazi scored Aston Villa's first goal in their 2–1 EFL Championship Play-off final victory over Derby County on May 27th. With an attempted diving header that deflected in off his back, he met an Ahmed Elmohamady cross from the right in the 44th minute. Richard Keogh blocked El Ghazi from just outside the penalty area, prompting John McGinn to leap in and score with a header, putting Aston Villa 2–0 up in the tie after 59 minutes.

On June 10, 2019, El Ghazi joined Villa for a four-year deal for an undisclosed fee. In his first Premier League season, he scored four goals and four assists, while Villa barely escaped relegation.

El Ghazi scored a goal in the 3–0 home win over Crystal Palace on Dec. 26, 2020, marking the start of the season for the 2020–21 season. It was one of 11 goals scored on the season, bringing him his best-ever goalscoring season with Ajax.

On January 13, 2022, El Ghazi signed for Everton on loan. In honor of former Ajax teammate Abdelhak Nouri, he wore the number 34 shirt.

El Ghazi completed a transfer to PSV Eindhoven on August 30, 2022. In a 2–1 loss to Twente on September 3rd, he made his debut in a 2–1 loss.

International career

El Ghazi, who has dual citizenship, was able to represent either the Netherlands or Morocco at a high level. In a friendly match against Austria on October 15, 2012, he made his international debut playing for the Netherlands under-18 team, losing 2–0.

During the summer break, El Ghazi met Cristiano Ronaldo, a player who seems to be boosting, and asked whether he should represent the Netherlands or Morocco. Ronaldo advised him to opt for the Netherlands because he has a better chance of participating in an international tournament based on their tradition. As a result, El Ghazi said he would like to represent the Netherlands and was subsequently called up to the Netherlands' two final UEFA Euro 2016 qualifying matches against Kazakhstan on October 10, 2015 and the Czech Republic on October 13th. When the Dutch defeated Kazakhstan 2–1, the Dutch beat Kazakhstan 2–1 but lost 3–2 to the Czechs, he was included in the Oranje's starting lineup for both games. After finishing fourth in their qualifying group, the Netherlands failed to qualify for the tournament proper.

El Ghazi was called up by Frank de Boer and the Netherlands on May 14th to be part of the provisional squad for the upcoming UEFA Euro 2020 tournament, marking his first call-up to the national team since 2015.

Piers Morgan and Anwar El Ghazi clash over a Dutch footballer's contract termination at German club Mainz... because "financial compensation does not dictate to whom I show humanity."

www.dailymail.co.uk, January 12, 2024
On social media, Piers Morgan and Dutch footballer Anwar El Ghazi clashed over the player's retirement from German club Mainz due to his contracting. El Ghazi's online rage erupted after South Africa announced that it had been'relieved' its Jewish captain of their Under-19 World Cup due to security issues surrounding pro-Israel remarks. Following remarks he made when winning a Jewish Rising Star award last year, David Teeger was barred from the role for the home tournament in South Africa.

Everton hoped to finish sixth in the 2021-22 season, but they didn't get the full amount back in the form of a 10-point deduction as Toffees were stunned by a 10-point decline

www.dailymail.co.uk, November 17, 2023
In the 2021-2022 season, Everton projected a sixth-place finish before finishing 16th, leaving them out on a £21 million income. Everton's 10-point deduction is continuing after the Toffees were found guilty of breaching the Premier League's financial laws back in the same campaign - suffering three years with staggering losses of nearly £372 million per year. That figure was more than £250 million over what the Premier League's guidelines allow clubs to lose over the three-year cycle, and now the source of their struggles from the season's defeat has been unearthed.
