Anushka Sharma (born 1 May 1988) is an Indian actor and film director who works in Hindi films.

She has received many accolades, including a Filmfare Award, and Forbes Asia's Top 30 Under 30 list of 2018. Sharma, who was born in Ayodhya and raised in Bangalore, did her first modelling assignment for Wendell Rodricks in 2007 and then moved to Mumbai to pursue a full-time career as a model.

In the highly acclaimed romantic film Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (2008), she made her acting debut opposite Shah Rukh Khan, which earned her the Best Actress nomination.

She rose to fame in Yash Raj Films' romances Band Baaja Baaraat (2010) and Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2012); the latter, in which she appeared as an aspiring filmmaker, earned her a Best Supporting Actress award at Filmfare. Sharma continued to receive accolades and several acting nominations for her portrayal of a woman abused by criminals in the 2015 crime thriller NH10, which also marked her debut, a dancer in the 2015 comedy-drama Dil Dharune Do, and a free-spirited woman in the 2016 romantic drama Ae Dil Hai Mushkil.

Sharma's top-grossing debuts came with the sports drama Sultan (2016) and Rajkumar Hirani's religious satire PK (2014) and biopic Sanju (2018); both three films were among the top-grossing Indian films. Sharma, in addition to acting in films, is the ambassador for a number of brands and products, as well as designing her own line of women's clothing, named Nush.

She supports various charities and causes, including gender justice and animal rights, and is co-founder of Clean Slate Films.

Sharma is married to cricketer Virat Kohli.

Personal life and off-screen work

In 2015, Sharma began practicing vegetarianism. The Times of India has ranked her as one of "Bollywood's hottest vegetarian celebrities." The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has also ranked her as "The Person of the Year" on several occasions. She is an avid Transcendental Meditation practitioner. Sharma has admitted to being a victim of anxiety disorder and seeking medical attention.

Sharma, a practicing Hindu, and her family, are a direct descendent of Anant Dham Atmabodh Ashram in Haridwar. Maharaj Anant Baba, her family's spiritual guru, is in charge of the ashram, and the actress is a frequent visitor to the ashram. Sharma's romantic relationship with cricketer Virat Kohli has drew a lot of newspaper coverage in India, but she has been reluctant to discuss it publicly. On December 11, the couple married in Italy. Vagua, a girl born on January 11, 2021, gave birth to Vamika.

Anushka Shama publicly chastised the Times Group for posting a snapshot of her daughter on vacation without her permission on June 14-2022. Anushka has been very private about her personal life, and has consistently requested that the media and paparazzi not to post photographs of her daughter.

Sharma appeared and walked the runway in September 2013 in honour of late filmmaker Yash Chopra. She appeared in the opening ceremony of the 2015 Indian Premier League held in Kolkata alongside other well-known celebrities, including Hrithik Roshan, Shahid Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan, Farhan Akhtar, and composer Pritam.

Sharma, in addition to acting, is involved with a variety of charities and causes. She walked the streets to help Shabana Azmi's Mijwan Welfare Society, a non-governmental group that supports women. As part of NDTV's "Our Girls, Our Pride" campaign, she joined other Bollywood celebrities in 2013. She appeared alongside other celebrities in a commercial produced by the National Film Development Corporation of India in order to raise concerns about the 'Right to Education' for children that was the same year. Sharma auctioned the leather jacket she wore in Jab Tak Hai Jaan on eBay in December 2014, with the proceeds going to the restoration of the flood-ravaged states of Kashmir and Assam. Sharma had also led a drive to raise funds for the victims of the Nepal earthquake in April 2015. She supports the annual Mumbai Film Festival and contributed to the cause in 2015. In comparison to their male counterparts in the film industry, Sharma has spoken out about the disparity in actor salaries. By giving a shout over in their first single, "Hum Hain Happy," she helped India's first transgender band, the 6-Pack Band (initiated by Y-Films), gain traction in India's first transgender group, the 6-Pack Band.

Sharma has also spoken out in favor of animal rights on social media. She took to Twitter in April 2014 to demand that horse-drawn carriages in Mumbai be banned. She condemned the Yulin Dog Meat Festival in China in June 2015 and encouraged her followers to sign an online petition aimed at stopping it. She launched 'Pawsitivity', a campaign aimed at alerting people of the adverse effects of noise, air, water, and soil pollution on animals in October 2015. In October 2017, Sharma launched Nush, her own clothing collection.

Anushka Sharma Career

Early life and modelling career

Anushka Sharma was born in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, on May 1, 1988. Colonel Ajay Kumar Sharma, his father, is an army officer, and her mother, Ashima Sharma, is a homemaker. Her ancestor lived in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, on Naishvilla road, and her father lived here before joining the Indian army. Urmila Sharma, Anushka Sharma's grandmother, still lives in their household. Sharma grew up in Sheela Bhawan's Naishvilla road.

Her father is a resident of Uttar Pradesh, while her mother is a Garhwali. Karnesh Sharma, a film director who served in the Merchant Navy before, is her elder brother. Sharma has claimed that being a military brat played a vital role in her identity and her contribution to her daily life. "I take pride in saying that I am an army officer's daughter even more than being an actor," she wrote in a column in The Times of India in 2012.

Sharma was born in Bangalore. She did her primary schooling at St. Mary's School, Margherita, Assam. Sakshi Dhoni, M.S Dhoni's wife, was her classmate in that class. She completed her education at Army School in Bangalore. She earned her degree in arts from Mount Carmel College, Bangalore.

She aimed to work in modeling or journalism and had no aspirations to be a actress. Sharma moved to Mumbai to further her modelling career after graduation. She joined Elite Model Management and was styled by style consultant Prasad Bidapa. Sharma made her runway debut at the Lakme Fashion Week in 2007 for designer Wendell Rodricks' Les Vamps Show, and she was chosen to be his last model at the Spring Summer 2007 exhibition. Since then, she has worked for brands Silk & Shine, Whisper, Nathella Jewelry, and Fiat Palio. "I think I was born to emote and act," Sharma later said. I'd walk down the ramp and smile and then smile as they used to say, 'give us a blank stare.' It was so frustrating not to smile. Sharma, who was modelling, also attended an acting school and began auditioning for film roles.

Acting career

Sharma made her acting debut in Aditya Chopra's romantic drama Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (2008), opposite Shah Rukh Khan. She took a day to prepare for her screen test at Yash Raj Films' studio, but she refused to do an impromptu one. She was signed to a three-film contract with the company and was offered the leading role of Tani Sahni, a young bride to a middle-aged man portrayed by Khan. Khalid Mohamed of Hindustan Times found her to be "assured and upright" in the film, but Nikhat Kazmi said she "lacks all chutzpah and can barely hold your attention." The film was a big commercial success, debuting as the second-highest grossing Hindi film of the year, and receiving Sharma Filmfare Award nominations for Best Actress and Best Female Debut. Sharma played the leading lady in the crime-comedy Badmaash Company, directed by Parmeet Sethi and co-starring Shahid Kapoor, Vir Das, and Meiyang Chang two years ago. Four underachieving friends who open a scam company venture receive mixed reviews for the film.

Sharma completed her three-film contract with Yash Raj Films by appearing in Band Baaja Bazarat, a romantic comedy directed by Maneesh Sharma and co-starring debutant Ranveer Singh in late 2010. Shruti Kakkar, an energetic middle-class Punjabi girl who started her own wedding planning business, was chosen for her role. Sharma learned to speak in Punjabi dialect, which she cited as the most difficult part of her role; she described the way the lead characters in the film interact as "crude but cute" and required her to "talk fast, often mix words, and even eliminate words entirely" in preparation; she described it as "crude but cute" and required her to "talk fast, sometimes mix words, often mixing words, and even omit entirely." Analysts doubted Band Baaja Baaraat's financial prospects, citing the middling reaction to Yash Raj Films' last few films, the absence of a male actor, and the fact that Sharma was a "most forgotten" actress by then. However, Band Baaja Baaraat received good feedback and emerged as a sleeper hit. Critics lauded Sharma's work, many of whom regarded it as her best work to that point. Sharma "comes into her own as the vivacious Delhi teen who dreams of advancing to multi-crore Sainik Farms weddings," critic Anupama Chopra wrote. Sharma received her second nomination for Best Actress for her role in the film.

The drama Patiala House (2011) directed by Nikkhil Advani and co-starring Akshay Kumar was Sharma's first venture not to be produced by Yash Raj Films. The film tells the story of a young cricketer (played by Kumar) who has a hard time convincing his father of his occupation; Sharma was portrayed as Kumar's love interest; Sukanya Verma of Rediff.com praised Sharma's work and dubbed her a "metaphor for hope." She reunited with co-star Ranveer Singh and producer Maneesh Sharma in the comedy-drama Ladies vs. Ricky Bahl in the same year. Ishika Desai, a salesgirl hired to outwit a conman (essayed by Singh), but she soon fell in love with him. Different people wrote about the film and Sharma's performance, with Piyali Dasgupta of NDTV calling her "believable but not endearing" in NDTV's review. Despite mixed reviews, the film was still a moderate success at the box office.

Sharma appeared in Yash Chopra's "swan song," the romance Jab Tak Hai Jaan, her fifth collaboration with Yash Raj Films and her second with Khan. Akira Rai, a Discovery Channel reporter who aspires to be a documentary filmmaker, was cast as Akira Rai, a young child from Akira Rai. Sharma "brings a spark to the film," Rajeev Masand said, but Raja Sen said "while Anushka can certainly play spunky, she must tone it down several notches." She received the Best Support Actress award for her role. Jab Tak Hai Jaan was the third highest-grossing Bollywood film of 2012.

Sharma appeared in Vishal Bhardwaj's Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola (2013), a political satire set in a village in Haryana. Sharma co-starred Pankaj Kapur, Imran Khan, and Shabana Azmi, a young girl whose character is based on Khan's name. Critics were largely positive about the film, but the box office was underperformed at its worst. Several commentators commented that Sharma was being stereotyped as a loud and loquacious woman; Raja Sen said she "is great in a couple of scenes near the climax," although Daily News and Analysis's Kanika Sikka was more skeptical and found her "unconvincing."

In Rajkumar Hirani's religious satire PK, Sharma played a television journalist befriending an alien (played by Aamir Khan). Sharma plays "a feisty poetry-loving girl who knows her mind better than most Hindi film heroines are allowed to" against Khan, according to critic Saibal Chatterjee. PK released its critically acclaimed film as the highest-grossing Bollywood film with a worldwide sales of over 7 billion (US$88 million). Sharma formed Clean Slate Filmz, whose first film release was Navdeep Singh's thriller NH10 (2015) in which she also appeared in lead roles. It was filmed at the 5th Beijing International Film Festival, and it tells the tale of a married couple whose lives are in jeopardy after an encounter with a group of criminals. Sharma underwent interval training for three months to strengthen her stamina in preparation. Saibal Chatterjee found the film to be a "taut and riveting thriller" and praised Sharma for "conveying a variety of moods as she transitions from the vulnerable to the fearless in a conflict in which the odds are heavily against her," and Prarthana Sarkar of International Business Times praised her for moving away from her romantic comedy look. The film also became a box office hit.

Boshyap's period crime drama Bombay Velvet (2015) (based on journalist Gyan Prakash's book Mumbai Fables) co-starring Ranbir Kapoor and Karan Johar, Sharma was cast as a jazz singer in Anurag Kashyap's period crime drama. Brigitte Bardote Helen and Waheeda Rehman's character was based on the actress Brigitte Bardote Bardote. Sharma watched films from the 1950s and 1960s as well as documentaries on hair and make-up to prepare. She also used temporary lip enhancers for the role, citing it as the reason for her return to a chat show in 2014 and debunking rumors that she underwent plastic surgery. Bombay Velvet was shown at the Locarno and Bucheon film festivals; critical analysis was split. Ritika Bhatia wrote for Business Standard, "she fills the stage with such raw emotion that her mascara-laden tears and fake eyelashes flutter with admiration." However, the film did not recover its 1.2 billion (US$15 million) investment. Sharma appeared in the supporting role of a dancer on a cruise ship in Zoya Akhtar's Dil Dhadakne Do, an ensemble comedy-drama in which she appeared opposite Ranveer Singh in the same year. Her and Singh choreographed the song sequence "Pehli Baar"; Reuters' Shilpa Jamkhandikar praised their on-screen chemistry, calling it "crackling." Both her appearances in NH10 and Dil Dhadakne Do received Sharma Filmfare Award nominations for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress, respectively.

In Sultan (2016), a romantic sports drama from writer-director Ali Abbas Zafar, Sharma next appeared with Yash Raj Films. She played Aarfa Hussain, a wrestler from Haryana whose inspirations the title character (played by Salman Khan) to participate in the sport. Sharma was initially reluctant to participate in the role because she didn't have the physique of a wrestler; instead, she researched on various weight classes to "beat people's belief that all wrestlers are massive." She trained for six weeks in the sport, learned to speak the Haryanvi dialect, and met with female wrestlers from around the state. Mixed reviews were given to the film and her role. Critics loved her significant role in an androcentric film; filmfare's Rachit Gupta referred to Sharma as "the best thing in the film" and said, "[e]even though she doesn't have the physique of a wrestler, her vivacious appearance makes you believe in her ardent but emotional character." However, Suprateek Chatterjee of The Huffington Post felt that she was unconvincing as a wrestler, claiming that "she has absolutely zero muscle mass and yet somehow finds the time to get her make-up exactly right." Sultan is one of India's top grossers with earnings of over 5 billion (US$63 million) worldwide.

Sharma's lead female role in Karan Johar's romantic drama Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, alongside Ranbir Kapoor and Aishwarya Rai, gave her even more success later this year. Mike Maccahil of The Guardian noticed how much Sharma "terrible spikiness" and her Kapoor chemistry contributed to a mediocre picture. Sweta Kaushal of Hindustan Times lauded Sharma's liberated female lead in another typical mixed analysis. Sharma received the Best Actress Award at the 62nd Filmfare Awards, earning over $22 billion (US$25 million) worldwide, and Sharma received the Best Actress award at the 62nd Filmfare Awards. Sharma was ranked as the year's most popular Bollywood actress with two top-grossing films in 2016.

Sharma appeared in the 2017 fantasy comedy Phillauri, co-starring Suraj Sharma and Diljit Dosanjh, as a friendly ghost who wishes to reunite with her lover. Sharma not only performed and starred, but she also performed a song in it. In Imtiaz Ali's Jab Harry Met Sejal, a romance about a Gujrati tourist (Sharma) in Europe that falls in love with her tour guide, she collaborated with him for the third time. Uday Bhatia of Mint praised Sharma's appearances in Phillauri and Jab Harry Met Sejal's Uday Bhatia [edy]" after she praised her ability for her "straight-faced com[edy]. In the previous film, Bhatia, 22, had criticized her relationship with Khan, who was 22 years old. Both these films were box office flops, unlike her 2016 debuts.

Pari, Sharma's first film release of 2018 was the horror film in which she starred and produced. It tells the tale of Rukhsana (Sharma), a homeless young woman who has been rescued by a benevolent man (played by Paraphrasedoutput). "Everything will save it," Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express found the film "scatter-brained" and said that "nothing will save it, not even a leading lady who is determined to do something different with her producing heft." Sukanya Verma's annual list of best actresses "going from unhinged to mesthetic," Sukanya Verma wrote. Against a production budget of 180 million (US$2.3 million), it earned 400 million (US$5.0 million) worldwide. In Rajkumar Hirani's biopic Sanju, Sharma next played a biographer chronicling the life of the troubled actor Sanjay Dutt, starring Ranbir Kapoor in the title role. Rajeev Masand praised the film's cast but was dismissive of Sharma's performance, saying she "sticks out with strange hair and stranger accent." Nonetheless, it was her third launch to gross over $5.3 billion (US$63 million) worldwide.

Sharma appeared in Sui Dhaaga, a comedy-drama co-starring Varun Dhawan, about a poor, young couple who start their own small-scale clothing business in the same year. The Times of India's Ronak Kotecha praised the subtle chemistry of the leads, thanking Sharma for his effortless performance. Best Actress was nominated for the Filmfare Critics Award. Sharma's last film performance of the year was Zero, a drama about a dwarf's romantic tribulations involving two women that reunited her with Shah Rukh Khan and Katrina Kaif. She played a NASA scientist with cerebral palsy, for which she worked with an occupational therapist and an audiologist; she also stayed in character and chose a wheelchair between shots. Anupama Chopra thought her portrayal of the illness to be "inconsistent and slumsy," but Namrata Joshi of The Hindu discovered her "earnest and invested" in the condition. Zero was a commercial failure during her previous work with Khan.

Sharma produced Netflix's horror film Bulbbul in 2020 as executive producer for her company's crime thriller series Paatal Lok, which was released on Amazon Prime Video, and executive producer for Netflix's horror film Bulbbul. Anna M. Vetticad discovered "feminism and the paranormal" in several of her company's projects, and she praised Sharma for her "courageous, non-conformist" choices as a producer. Mai: A Mother's Rage, a 2022 TV drama starring a middle-aged housewife fighting crime for Netflix, was released in 2022. Qala will be Netflix's next generation.

Sharma will return to acting after four years with Jhulan Goswami's biopic, Chakda'Xpress, which will be released on Netflix.
