Anupam Kher Life

Anupam Kher (born 7 March 1955) is an Indian actor and the former Chairman of the Film and Television Institute of India.

He has been nominated for two National Film Awards and eight Filmfare Awards.

He has appeared in over 500 films in various languages and many plays.

For his role in Saaransh (1984), he was awarded the Filmfare Award for Best Actor.

In total, he has won the Filmfare Award for Best Comedian five times, including Ram Lakhan (1989), Khel (1992), Darr (1993), and Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (1995).

He twice received the National Film Award for Special Mention for his appearances in Daddy (1989) and Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara (2005).

He received the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1989 for his role in the film Vijay (1988). In addition to being in Hindi films, David O. Russell's Golden Globe Laureate Beckham (2002), Ang Lee's Golden Lion-winning Lust, Caution (2006), and David O. Russell's Oscar-winning Silver Linings Playbook (2012).

He received a BAFTA nomination for his support role in the British television sitcom The Boy (2018). He has served as chairman of the Central Board of Film Certification and the National School of Drama in India.

In 2004, and Padma Bhushan in 2016 for his contributions to the field of cinema and arts. Anupam Kher was elected FTII chairman in October 2017, but his appointment was described as difficult due to his pro-BJP stance and long absences.

On October 31, 2018, he resigned as the chairman of FTII, citing his commitments for the American television show New Amsterdam.

Early life

Kher was born in Shimla on Monday, a Kashmiri Pandit family. Pushkar Nath Kher, his father, was a clerk in Himalaya's forest service, and his mother, Dulari Kher, is a housewife. He was educated at the D. A. V. School in Shimla. He studied economics at the Himalayan College in Sanjauli, but he dropped out to study Indian theatre at Panjab University, Chandigarh.

Kher graduated from the National School of Drama (NSD) in New Delhi in 1978. At the Himalayan Pradesh University, some of his early roles were in plays. He taught drama in Bharatendu Natya Akademi in Lucknow for a small part in his debut film Sheeshay ka Ghar.

Personal life

In 1985, he married actress Kirron Kher, a Member of parliament from Chandigarh who is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. Sikandar Kher, her son, and his stepson, are actors. He was appointed as the Pratham Education Foundation's goodwill ambassador in 2010, which aims to raise children's education in India. Kher is a ardent supporter of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Hindu University of America awarded an honorary doctorate degree in Philosophy of Hindu Studies on September 2021.

He slept on a railway platform for a month in Bombay's difficult days as an actor (present-day Mumbai).

In 1984, a 29-year-old Kher played a retired middle-class man who loses his son in Saaransh. Kher said he lost his hair at a young age, and, in the process, his first role was played as a 65-year-old at the age of 29. Say Na Something To Anupam Uncle, Sawaal Dus Crore Ka, Lead India, and The Anupam Kher Show - Kucch Bhi Hai are among the TV shows hosted by him later. When having to face paralysis, he has received accolades for his work in Hum Aapke Hai Kaun.

Kher has appeared in numerous comedies, but he has also appeared in a variety of roles. He received the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Performance in Daddy (1989).

He has appeared in many films including Darr (1993), Zamaana Deewana (1995), Trash Kuch Hai Jaan (2004), and Happy New Year (2014).

He moved into producing with Om Jai Jagadish (2002) and has been a producer. In the film Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara (2005), he produced and starred. For his performance, he received the Best Actor Award from the Karachi International Film Festival. In 1984, Kher made his acting debut in Bollywood with the Mahesh Bhatt-directed drama film Saaransh, in which he played a 65-year-old middle class teacher who has lost his son. The film was a moderate success in box office, but Kher's performance drew him acclaim. He has received numerous accolades for his portrayal of the elderly father, including the Filmfare Award for Best Actor.

He worked in numerous other departments from 1985 to 1988. All of them were moderately popular, but his role in that film was not well-received. In N. Chandra's action thriller Tezaab (1988), which was the year's best-grossing film and co-starred Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit, Kher's role as Shyam Lal, a man whose daughter is forced to dance to make money for his daughter's sake, was widely appreciated. His role in the poorly-received Vijay was lauded later in 1988, winning him the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor.

In 1989, he earned greater fame for his role in Ram Lakhan, a comedy by Subhash Ghai, and Daddy, a television film reunited him with Bhatt. Anil Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit, Jackie Shroff, Dimple Kapadia, Raakhee, Amrish Puri, and Paresh Rawal co-starred, as the man in the supporting role of Deodhar Shastri, a man who disapproves his daughter's marriage with her childhood friend who is also a love interest. Ram Lakhan was the country's second highest-grossing Bollywood film of the year, grossing more than 326 million (US$4.1 million) worldwide. With several commentators quoting it as his best show at that time, the former received universal praise. Both Daddy and Ram Lakhan received accolades; for the former, he received a National Film Award – Special Mention and a Filmfare Critics Award for Best Performance; and for the latter, he received his first Filmfare Award for Best Performance in a Comedian – also known as the Best Comedian Award.

Later in 1989, Kher appeared in a sequel to the 1986 fantasy film Nagina, called Nigahen: Part II. Gorakh Nath, a snake charmer co-starring Sridevi and Sunny Deol, portrayed a snake charmer. It didn't do well at the box office. In Vidhu Vinod Chopra's action film Parinda, he appeared in a cameo for Yash Chopra's love triangle Chandni, and portrays a police inspector. Despite a poor start, Parinda was a vital and commercial success. Pankaj Parashar's slapstick comedy ChaalBaaz stars Sridevi, Deol, and Rajinikanth in Kher's last film of the year. Despite receiving mixed feedback from observers, ChaalBaaz emerged as an economic success.

In Indra Kumar's debut film debut, Hazari Prasad, a miser who tries to find a wealthy woman to marry his poor son, portrayed the antagonistic role of Hazari Prasad. Madhuri Dixit co-starring Aamir Khan and Madhuri Dixit. Critics praised the Dil's performance, and Kher's contribution was lauded. Dil was the highest-grossing Bollywood film of the year, with domestic sales approaching more than $2.3 million, and Kher received a Best Support Actor award at Filmfare for his work.

Kher has been lauded once more in 1991 for his role in Yash Chopra's romantic drama Lamhe, which starred Sridevi and Anil Kapoor and featured him as Kapoor's childhood friend. In India, Lamhe was a box office failure, but it was an overseas success. Despite the film's poor showing at the box office, Kher received his second Filmfare Best Comedian Award for his role.

For the fifth time (alongside Madhuri Dixit and Aruna Irani) in Indra Kumar's drama Beta (1992), the top-grossing Bollywood production of the year with a worldwide gross of 235 million (US$2.9 million). His comedic appearance in the film earned him another nomination for the Best Comedian Award at Filmfare. Later this year, he played Dixit's uncle in the drama Khel, receiving him his third and second consecutive Filmfare Best Comedian Awards.

In the film Darr (1993), co-starring Shah Rukh Khan, Juhi Chawla, and Sunny Deol, in which he appeared as Chawla's brother, Kher next reunited him with Yash Chopra. It was one of the year's top-grossing Hindi films, grossing over $200 million (US$2.5 million) worldwide, winning Kher her fourth and third consecutive Best Comedian at Filmfare, as it was one of the year's top-grossing Hindi films. It received the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment, in comparison to other awards.

In 1994, Kher portrayed the owner of a factory in Raj Kanwar's thrilling Laadla, alongside Sridevi, Anil Kapoor, Aruna Irani, Raveena Tandon, and Farida Jalal. It received mixed critiques from analysts, but the company was still profitable, and it generated over $1.4 million (US$1.4 million) worldwide. She began earning more money when he appeared alongside Salman Khan and Madhuri Dixit in Sooraj R. Barjatya's romance Hum Aapke Hain Koun, which was the highest-grossing Bollywood film at the time, with global revenues of over 1.8 billion (US$23 million). He received another Best Supporting Actor nomination at Filmfare, and his second straight film to receive the National Film Award for Best Popular Film.

Aditya Chopra's romantic drama Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, about two non-resident Indians who fell in love on a trip around Europe, was her first publication in 1995. The father of Khan's character, Dharamvir, received his fifth Filmfare Best Comedian Award for his role as Kher's Dharamvir. Dilwale Le Jayenge's second straight film to earn over $113 million (US$13 million) worldwide, making him a blockbuster just like Hum Aapke Hain Koun's! Chaahat (1996) and Guddee (1997) were his next two films, although neither of them were flops at the box office. Kher's role in both of these films was not well received.

In Karan Johar's romance Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), he appeared alongside Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Rani Mukerji, and Archana Puran Singh. Kher played Mr. Malhotra, a college principal, in this film. It was Kher's third blockbuster hit in the last four years, earning him his third Best Comedian nomination at Filmfare.

In 1999, Kher played the father of Anil Kapoor's character in Satish Kaushik's women-centric drama Hum Aapke Rehte Hain, which attracted critical praise and was a commercial success. He then partnered with David Dhawan in the comedy-drama Haseena Maan Jaayegi starring Sanjay Dutt, Govinda, and Karisma Kapoor. Both these films were huge commercial successes and one of the top-grossing Bollywood films of 1999, with the former earning over 361 million (US$4.5 million). In a short film called Greetings, he was named the best actor at the New York International Film Festival for his role in a short film called Happy Birthday.

In 2011, Kher published his first book, The Best Thing About You is You!, which was a best-seller. I didn't know it was published by Penguin Random House on August 5, 2019. Based on his experiences with the COVID-19 crisis, he wrote Your Best Day Is Today! He published a poem written by Lucknow-based Poet Pankaj Prasun on social media in honor of his father's 9th death anniversary.
