Henry Antony Cardew Worrall Thompson (born 1 May 1951) is an English restaurateur and celebrity chef, television presenter, and radio broadcaster.
Early life
Worrall Thompson was born in Warwickshire's Stratford-upon-Avon. Michael Ingham (real name Peter Worrall Thompson) and Joanna Duncan were both actors. He was educated at the King's School in Canterbury, where he sustained facial injuries while playing rugby. He had to wait until he was twenty-one years old before undergoing plastic surgery to fix the disfigurement.
Personal life
He dropped the 'h' in his teenage years and hasn't used it since. The 'h' is not pronounced,' so it adds little to the name.
Worrall Thompson married Jill Thompson when he was 26, but the couple divorced five years later. Militza Millar, an Australian, married him in 1983. The couple had two children and divorced. He has been married to Jacinta Shiel, his third wife, since 1996. The couple live in High Wycombe and have two children.
On a total of five occasions, he received a police warning for shoplifting items, including wine and cheese from Tesco's Henley-on-Thames branch. In 2015, he described how the number of five shoplifting attempts total was £70.68 and how he believed it was for the thrills; he was distraught and sought advice.
Worrall Thompson is a sponsor of FOREST, a UK-based, nicotine industry-funded lobby opposing government control of cigarettes and ASH. He said in February 2010 that he had quit smoking in a segment on Radio 4's Woman's Hour.
He has been instrumental in fundraising for the Conservative Party and argued against the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union.
Worrall Thompson sponsored the Antony Worrall Thompson Trophy in 2003, a charity football tournament held by eight semi-professional teams in the summer and pre-season. However, the award lasted for a year due to Worrall Thompson's financial challenges, as well as the 2003–2004 final being fought between Altrincham F.C. Victoria F.C. and Northwich Victoria F.C. Altrincham won the game 4–3. In the 2017–2018 season, the tournament was revived.
Worrall Thompson was a regular columnist for Uncovered magazine in October 2010, offering recipes and tips on eating for optimal health and season's best produce.
Early career
He studied hotel administration at Westminster Kingsway College after leaving school. It is said that his grandmother declined to write to him because she could not bring herself to write "Essex" on the envelope. He moved to London and became sous-chef at Brinkley's Restaurant on Fulham Road in 1978, becoming head chef the following year. He went on a sabbatical in France the year after, eating and learning his way around the local cuisine. Hassan, his business partner, returned to the United Kingdom and began making pans.
