Since October 7, 1962, Zerbe has been married to Arnette Jens (sister of actress Salome Jens); the pair have two children.
Life and career
Zerbe was born in Long Beach, California, the son of Catherine (née Scurlock) and Arthur LeVan Zerbe. He attended Newport Harbor High School. He attended Pomona College in Claremont, California, graduating in 1958. His parents were both Pomona College graduates. He served in the United States Air Force from 1959 to 1961.
When Zerbe was 17 years old, he was inspired by stage performances. He attended the Stella Adler Studio in New York City. With The Cave Dwellers, he made his New York City stage debut on October 15, 1961. On television, he has appeared on Naked City, The Virginian, Kung Fu (2 episodes), The Wild West, Twelve O'Clock High, Bonanza, The F.B.I., The Rookies, The Mount Forety, Columbo, and many others.
He appeared in The Young Riders and co-starred Harry O in the series's second and final seasons. In North and South: Book II, Zerbe was also seen as Pontius Pilate in the miniseries A.D. and as General Grant. In 1978, he appeared in numerous episodes of the Centennial series Centennial. His most recent work appears in American black comedy/crime film American Hustle, released in 2013.
Zerbe, the former artistic director of Reflections, A New Plays Festival in Rochester, New York, has toured the United States in 1981, with Behind the Broken Words, a collection of contemporary poetry and comedy as well as dramatic performances with fellow actor Roscoe Browne.
In 1976, Zerbe received an Emmy Award for Outstanding Continuing Performance by a Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his work as Lieutenant K.C. Trench in Harry O. Connor's private detective story. In 1981, he appeared alongside eldest brother Benjamin Hubbard in a Broadway revival of The Little Foxes.
