Anthony Caro Life

Sir Anthony Alfred Caro (8 March 1924 – October 23, 2013) was an English abstract sculptor whose work was characterized by assemblages of metal made from 'found' industrial objects.

His style was of the modernist school, having worked with Henry Moore early in his career.

He was praised as the best British sculptor of his time.

Early life and education

Caro was born in New Malden, England, to a Jewish family, and was the youngest of three children. When Caro was three years old, his father, a stockbroker, moved the family to a farm in Churt, Surrey. Caro was educated at Charterhouse School, where his housemaster introduced him to Charles Wheeler. He studied at the Farnham School of Art (now the University of the Creative Arts) during the holidays and spent time in Wheeler's studio. He received a degree in engineering at Christ's College, Cambridge, later. He studied sculpture at the Regent Street Polytechnic in 1946, before moving on to the Royal Academy Schools from 1947 to 1952, after being in the Royal Navy for a time.

Personal life

Caro married Sheila Girling in 1949 and they had two sons together: Timothy (born 1951), a zoologist; and Paul (born 1958, a painter).
