Anthony Bennett Career

High school career

Bennett attended Harold M. Brathwaite Secondary School in Brampton. He moved to Beckley, West Virginia, to play basketball for Mountain State Academy, and after the school closed a year later, he moved to Henderson, Nevada, to compete for the basketball preparatory academy Findlay Prep. According to ESPNU 100, the top forward and overall in the 2012 high school class, as well as the #7 player by Rivals.com.

Bennett narrowed down his college choices to Oregon and UNLV, despite initially being surrounded by many organizations. He pledged to UNLV under head coach Dave Rice on May 12, 2012.

College career

Bennett appeared in 35 games during the UNLV Runnin' Rebels basketball season, 2012-2013. Although mainly starting as a power forward, he would occasionally play small forward. Despite only playing 27.1 minutes a game due to injury, he averaged 16.1 points and 8.1 rebounds in a game. He shot 53.3 percent from the field and 37.5% from three-point range. He was extremely organized in college, with a PERSON of 28.3. Bennett was plagued with a shoulder injury midway through the season. His minutes were reduced to allow him to rest, and he even came off the bench in a few games. UNLV lost in the second round to California after making it to the NCAA tournament.

Bennett announced for the NBA draft in April 2013, foregoing his final three years of college eligibility. He underwent elective surgery for sleep apnea and asthma in May 2013.

Professional career

Bennett was one of thirteen players to be drafted as a top lottery pick, implying that he was not supposed to be selected as a top lottery pick. He was the first Canadian ever to be selected first overall in an NBA draft.

Bennett signed a two-year, $10.9 million rookie scale deal with the Cleveland Cavaliers on August 20, 2013. He was ranked as one of the worst first overall picks in recent memory after putting on several poor performances to start his rookie season.

In a 100–89 loss to the New Orleans Pelicans on January 28, 2014, Bennett scored 15 points and eight rebounds. It was his first double-figure scoring game in his NBA career, coming after 33 games —three times as long as any previous No. — before that one. 1 is the overall pick. In their first game, nearly two-thirds of all previous top picks scored in double digits. Bennett defeated the Sacramento Kings 109-99 on February 11, 2014, recording his first double-double with 19 points and ten rebounds. He appeared in 52 games during the 2013–2014 season, averaging 4.2 points and 3.3 rebounds in 12.8 minutes per game.

Bennett debuted in July 2014 for the 2014 NBA Summer League, where he averaged 13.3 points in four games.

Bennett was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves on August 23, 2014 in a three-team deal involving the Cavaliers and the Philadelphia 76ers.

The Timberwolves exercised their third-year team option on Bennett's rookie scale contract on October 19, 2014, extending the deal through the 2015–16 season. In a 121–92 loss to the San Antonio Spurs, he scored a career-high 20 points on November 21, 2014. He was out for two weeks due to an injured right ankle he suffered the day before playing against the Phoenix Suns on February 21, 2015. Bennett played in just four more games over the 2014–2015 season after recovering from the injury. He averaged 5.2 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 15.7 minutes per game in 57 games (three starts) for the Timberwolves.

Bennett was waived by the Timberwolves on September 23, 2015, as a result of a contract buyout.

Bennett signed a one-year, veteran's minimum contract with his hometown Toronto Raptors on September 28, 2015. In a 113-103 victory over the Boston Celtics, he made his debut with them on October 30, scoring three rebounds and one steal. Bennett ordered that Bennett be sent by the team to Raptors 905 of the NBA Development League on December 20, which Bennett requested. In a 105–94 victory over the Delaware 87ers, he appeared in 905 for the Raptors, scoring 13 points and 4 rebounds in a 105-94 victory, becoming the NBA's first No. 1. In the D-League, there is a single overall pick to play. He returned to Toronto later that night for their match against the Sacramento Kings. He had three more assignments to Raptors 905. He was waived by the Raptors on March 1, 2016. During Bennett's time in Toronto, his passion for the game was questioned, and the company became more frustrated with his inability to comprehend the NBA's cut-throat world despite their attempts to work with him.

Bennett also signed a two-year, $2.1 million contract with the Brooklyn Nets on July 14, 2016. In a 110–108 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks on October 29, he made his Nets debut in their third game of the season on October 29, scoring nine points in 18 minutes off the bench. In a 124-105 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder on November 18, he scored a season-high 12 points. He was assigned to the Long Island Nets, Brooklyn's D-League affiliate, on November 27. He was recalled by Brooklyn prior to their game later that night. On November 28, he was recalled to Long Island and was deployed the next day. In a 112–103 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks on December 3, he made his first appearance of the season and had 7 points and a career-high 14 rebounds. He was released by the Nets on January 9, 2017.

Bennett signed Fenerbahçe of the Turkish Basketball Super League on a 1+1 deal on January 13, 2017. He averaged 1.2 points per game in ten EuroLeague games. Fenerbahçe won their first EuroLeague title in 2017, beating Olympiacos 80–64 in the championship game. Fenerbahçe released him on May 25, 2017.

Bennett was signed by the Phoenix Suns on September 22, 2017. He was released by the Suns on October 11, 2017. He signed the Northern Arizona Suns of the NBA G League later this month. He withdrew to join the Canadian national team for the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup Qualifications on November 19, 2017. On November 29, he returned to Northern Arizona.

Bennett was traded to the Maine Red Claws on December 28, 2017, along with a third-round pick for Wesley Saunders' player rights and a second-round pick.

In October 2018, Bennett was traded to the Aston Caliente Clippers in exchange for James Michael McAdoo and a third-round draft pick.

Bennett and the Houston Rockets agreed to a one-year, $1.7 million contract on July 12, 2019. However, he was released on October 9 after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery.

In May 2021, he signed with Cangrejeros de Santurce of the Puerto Rican Baloncesto Superior Nacional. Bennett's deal was ended on July 7 in order to make space for Dante Cunningham, according to the club.

Bennett joined Hapoel Jerusalem of the Israeli Basketball Premier League on August 25, 2021 (IBSL). Bennett made his debut on October 5, logging a team-high 22 points, 8 rebounds, and one assist in 23 minutes of play. Bennett's deal was confirmed on October 10, despite previous rumors that he was leaving the team. He was released on January 2, 2022, and was postponed until 2022. He averaged 6.3 points and 3.3 rebounds in 12.9 minutes per game in eight games.

Bennett joined the Taiwanese P. League+ on February 9, 2022. Because of the contract, he became the NBA's highest-drafted player to play in Taiwan professionally.

Bennett signed to Hsinchu JKO Lioneers for the 2022-23 season on August 19, 2022.

National team career

Bennett competed in the 2009 FIBA Americas Under-16 Championship and the 2010 FIBA Under-17 World Championship, assisting Canada in winning a bronze medal in each tournament. He was a teammate of Andrew Wiggins, the top overall pick in the 2014 NBA draft, and his former Timberwolves colleague.

Bennett was named in July 2015 to the Canadian national team roster for the 2015 Pan American Games. Bennett, a boy from Toronto, helped Canada win the silver medal with four victories, including an epic victory over the United States in the semi-finals, before losing in the final to Brazil. Bennett's average was 15.6 points and 10.4 rebounds per game in the tournament.
