She is of English, German, and Jewish ancestry. Lederman's father served as a treasurer at the University of Pennsylvania, while her mother did social service work. Lederman was raised in Quakertown and attended a Quaker school for her early education.

Lederman, aspired to be a Junior Olympic swimmer, but she stopped participating in the sport after a foot injury in a car crash caused by a inebriated driver. She then attended The Crefeld School and was sexually assaulted by a male teacher from the school. The incident resulted in a lawsuit in which Lederman and another female student testified against him. She became involved with numerous homeless peers who were taking heroin and being involved in other criminal offences. Lederman started doing service work in Hawaii, then moving to Central America for a non-profit group benefiting underprivileged children. He graduated from high school at the age of seventeen. She returned to the United States and spent Easterseals as a camp counselor, as well as working with agencies supporting children with disabilities such as cerebral palsy and spina bifida.

Lederman attended The College of Santa Fe, New Mexico, where she took art and counseling classes for eight years. Lederman had a heroin use while attending college and had several blackout accidents, one of which involved her crash on a motorcycle and suffering serious injuries. "I wasn't getting wasted to have fun and be inebriated," she remembered. "I wanted a fucking break." I hated myself. I just didn't want to be near myself." Two weeks after her graduation, the college went out of business and closed.
