Early life
Kendrick was born in Portland, Maine, on August 9, 1985, the niece of accountant Janice (née Cooke) and history teacher William Kendrick. Her father has also worked in finance. She is of English, Irish, and Scottish descent. She has an older brother who is a comedian, as well as a character in the drama film Looking for an Echo (2000). She attended Deering High School.

After meeting while filming Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, she began dating English filmmaker Edgar Wright in 2009. In March 2013, the two bands broke up. After meeting whilst filming Drinking Buddies, she began dating English cinematographer Ben Richardson in February 2014. That friendship has since been strained.

Career
Kendrick began her career as an infant, auditioning for theater performances in New York City. When she was 12, she appeared in the 1998 Broadway musical High Society as a supporting actress. At the Drama Desk Awards and Tony Awards, her appearance earned her a Theater World Award and nominations for Featured Actress in a Musical. She continued to perform in Stephen Sondheim's musical A Little Night Music, which was staged in 2003 in New York City.
