Anna Flanagan (born 8 January 1992) is a former Australian field hockey player who plays as a defender for the Canberra Labor Club Strikers in the Australian Hockey League.
She has represented the country at one World Cup and one Olympic Games tournament, earning over 100 caps for the Australian national team since 2010.
Personal life
Flanagan was born on January 8, 1992. Fred Flanagan, a Canberra PE teacher, is her father. She grew up in Canberra, where she competed in tennis, track and field, and field hockey. She attended Brindabella Christian College before heading to Radford College. She obtained a Bachelor of Science Journalism from the University of Canberra. She began working in journalism about the time she was accepted to the Australian field hockey team. Following the Commonwealth Games in order to develop her field hockey career, she moved from Canberra to Perth. Following this change, she began working for Fox Sports in Perth as a journalist. She appeared at Curtin University in 2011 and 2012.
Career
Flanagan is a defender who excels at taking penalty kicks. In 2000, after being a multi-sport athlete, she made a pledge to playing field hockey.
Flanagan made her national team debut in March 2010 against South Korea as an 18-year-old, after being first called up to the squad when she was 17 years old. Her selection to the team came at a time when the team was injecting a lot of youth players following the 2008 Summer Olympics. She will represent Australia as a member of the Commonwealth Games' gold medalist team later this year. She came fifth-place finish on the 2012 Summer Olympics as a member of the Australian team. She had over 50 caps for the national team going into the Games.
Flanagan was named in 2013 as the World Young Player of the Year in field hockey. She participated in the 2012–13 Women's FIH Hockey World League, which took place in Tucumán, Argentina. In the final game, her team secured second place, and she scored the only Australian goal.
