Anita Pallenberg (born 1942 – 2017) was a German-Italian actress, photographer, and model.
Pallenberg, a style icon and "It Girl" of the 1960s and 1970s, was credited as the Rolling Stones' muse, and later, she was the partner of Stones guitarist Keith Richards, who died in 1970 to 1980, and she had three children.
Early life
Pallenberg was born in Rome on April 6th, 1942, the niece of Arnold "Arnaldo" Pallenberg, a German-Italian sales agent, amateur guitarist, and hobbyist painter, as well as Paula Wiederhold, a German embassy secretary. Because of World War II, the family was estranged, and she did not know her father until she was three years old. Later, her mother sent her to a boarding school in Germany so she could learn the language. At an early age, she became fluent in four languages.
Pallenberg was kicked out of school when she was 16, after which she spent time in Rome with the Dolce Vita crowd, and then travelled to New York City to hang out with Andy Warhol's Factory. She began her career as a fashion model in Paris. She studied medicine, photo restoration, and graphic design without ever completing a degree. She had lived in Germany and her native Rome, as well as in New York City, where she appeared in the play Paradise Now, which featured onstage nudity and Andy Warhol's Factory.
Personal life
Marlon Leon Sundeep (born 10 August 1969), daughter Dandelion Angela (born 17 April 1972), and a son Tara Jo Gunne were together in the family's 3 children. Tara Jo Jo Jo died in his cot ten weeks after birth; SIDS or pneumonia was the underlying cause of death.
Pallenberg later stated that she became pregnant in 1968 but that she was forced to have an abortion so she could participate in the film Performance, which made her feel ill. During the filming, she became pregnant with Marlon.
Keith's mother blamed Pallenberg for her death and said she was an unfit mother, and she brought Angela Jo Jo Jo's baby to her. Pallenberg grew Marlon mainly on the road with the band, teaching him to read and write. Marlon was eight years old when she moved to Long Island, New York, so he could have a more normal life and go to school. She lived in Chelsea, London, in later years, but spent the winters in Jamaica.
At one point, she expressed an interest in writing a book but decided against going further. "The publishers want to hear only about Mick Jagger's tales and more details, but I'm not interested," she said in 2008. "I had many publishers and they were all the same." They were all hungry. And, for one reason, no one is going to write autobiographies, and that's why I'm not going to do it. I don't want to write one if young Posh Spice can write her autobiography.
Pallenberg suffered from hepatitis C and two hip replacements, including a hip replacement, which led to her walking with a limp. Pallenberg stopped using heroin after detoxing in the early 1980s, but later had a relapse. She said she had been 14 years sober from drugs in 2014. She stopped drinking in 1987 but after her second hip surgery in 2004, she had a relapse with alcohol. She used to attend AA meetings on a regular basis. When Alain Elkann was interviewed in August 2016, she told Alain Elkann that she was "ready to die." I've done so much here. My Mother died at the age of 94. I don't want to lose my freedom. Now that I'm over 70, I'm not positive I'll live more than 40 years old, and to be honest, I didn't think I'd live beyond 40 years old.
