Anita Asante Career

Club career

In 1998, Asante joined Arsenal as a junior. She was a senior player in 2003/2004. Asante was part of the Arsenal team that lifted the quadruple in 2006-2007, winning the UEFA Women's Cup, FA Women's National Premier League, FA Women's Cup, and the FA Women's Premier League Cup. Asante was part of Arsenal's historic victory as the first team outside of Germany or Scandinavia to win the UEFA Women's Cup. Asante is said to have been an excellent performer in the final.

Asante and teammate Lianne Sanderson had joined Chelsea Ladies on July 3, 2008.

Upon signing Asante said:

After the players' departure, Arsenal boss Vic Akers chastised them publicly: "You think you have the admiration of players, and then they do what they do." It's in a sad shape of affairs."

Asante joined Sky Blue FC, a New Jersey-based WPS franchise. She was instrumental in the club's victory in the inaugural WPS championship. In return for India Trotter, Asante was traded to the Saint Louis Athletica on May 6th, 2010. When the Saint Louis Athletica folded on May 27, 2010, she was acquired by the Chicago Red Stars. On August 6, 2010, she was subsequently sold to the Washington Freedom.

Asante's coach, Jim Gabarra, returned to Sky Blue FC in December 2010 for her second stint as her coach at Washington Freedom, after Sky Blue's Jim Gabarra took over. Asante joined Swedish club Kopparbergs/Göteborg FC before the 2012 season, despite the WPS's demise prior to the 2012 season. Göteborg's first game in the UEFA Women's Champions League quarter finals was played at Arsenal, defeating him 3–1 in the first leg. Asante appeared in 41 league games for Göteborg over the two seasons, scoring nine goals. She won the Swedish Cup and the Swedish Super Cup with KGFC before joining national champions LdB FC Malmö in October 2013. Asante could not play in Malmö's looming Champions League fixture with holders VfL Wolfsburg due to a foot injury. Asante has won numerous competitions at FC Rosengrd (formerly known as LdB Malmö), including the Swedish Cup 2014 and 2015 (Svenska Supercupen), as well as runners up in 2015. Anita has been to the quarter-finals of Champions League three seasons with FCR.

She signed with Aston Villa, the club's newly promoted team, on June 7, 2020, ahead of their maiden WSL campaign. In a 1–0 victory over Birmingham City, Asante's first goal for her new club was the deciding goal. Asante announced on April 26, 2022, that she would not return to playing at the end of the season. In July 2022, she was named first-team coach at FA Women's Championship club Bristol City.

International career

Asante was a member of the England Under 17 team. She was also a member and captain of the England Under 19s and competed in the inaugural FIFA World Under 19 Championship in Canada in 2002. She earned 11 international caps in all at this level. She made her first call up to the England Under 21s in 2004, a month after her senior international debut.

Asante made her international debut against Iceland in May 2004. In March 2005, she was her first full international against Northern Ireland. She scored her first international goal in just her second full international, against Norway in April 2005. This was to be the winning goal. Asante was included in England's squad for Euro 2005.

Asante was involved in the 2011 World Cup for the 50th time in her career, after England defeated eventual champions Japan 2–0. Asante, who was part of the England squad that reached the final of Euro 2009, was secure in the team's chances going into Euro 2013. She was released at halftime in England's 3–0 loss to France, which resulted in a first round elimination.

In 2015, the politically vocal Asante was "a glaring omission" from England's squad for the 2015 World Cup in Canada. She was the first English player to sign a petition protesting the tournament's controversial artificial turf. She chastised head coach Mark Sampson for the manner in which he informed her of her absence and her refusal to engage in further correspondence.

Insurgent England head coach Phil Neville recalled Asante in his first squad for the 2018 SheBelieves Cup. Asante sustained an anterior cruciate ligament injury and was forced to leave after 14 minutes in the first match of the tournament, beating France 4–1.

Asante was selected in the 18-player Great Britain squad for the 2012 London Olympics in June 2012. She appeared in all four games as Britain was defeated 2–0 by Canada in the last eight.

KATHRYN BATTE: Real Madrid have Spain's World Cup hero Olga Carmona in their ranks, but their ground pays homage to everyone except the women's side

www.dailymail.co.uk, November 21, 2023
THE WORLD OF WOMEN'S FOOTBALL: The Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano in Madrid has 14 replica Champions League trophies. Real Madrid's emergence in Europe shows their hegemony. In 2006, the stadium, named after their legendary forward, opened. The walls are adorned with photographs of Di Stefano and his colleagues from the 1950s and 1960s. Real's reserve team plays their games here, and the track was also used by the first team during the Covid pandemic, although the Bernabeu was closed during the Covid pandemic. Oh, and it is also the home of Real Madrid women, but it is impossible to find any proof of this.

Jill Scott, Ellen White, and Anita Asante have all been inducted into the WSL Hall of Fame, with the FA recognizing the three legends' visit to the National Football Museum

In a commemoration held this week, England legends Jill Scott, Ellen White, and Anita Asante were inducted into the Women's Super League Hall of Fame. Both Scott and White were members of the Lionesses team that won the Euros in 2022, 2022, while Asante had accumulated 71 caps for the national team during a memorable career. Asante has been part of England's U23s coaching staff, while White and Scott have embarked on punditry careers after their retirements after the Euros. Since winning I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here last year, White has also become a mother, while Scott has become a television star.

www.dailymail.co.uk, August 18, 2023
The Lionesses will face Spain in their first-ever World Cup final, kicking off at 11 a.m. in Sydney, in less than 48 hours. Both ITV and BBC will be broadcasting coverage of the case, with commentators already dreaming of etching their own iconic quote into public consciousness for decades to come. There's barely a whisker between the broadcasters, both of whom have been following the competition so far, with both companies bringing top talent to the rafters.
