Angelica Locsin Colmenares (born April 23, 1985) is a Filipina television and film actress, commercial model, film director, and fashion designer.

She rose to fame in television shows as Alwina in the 2004 fantasy-themed television series Mulawin, and Darna in the Mars Ravelo eponymous comic's television adaptation.

Locsin, a contract artist for GMA Network, worked with the ABS-CBN until she was transferred to ABS-CBN, the company's rival network.

Lyka played in the television series Lobo, earning her an International Emmy Award nomination for best actress.

She appeared in blockbuster films In The Name Of Love and One More Try, which earned critical acclaim for both performances.

Locsin received the Star Award for Movie Actress of the Year and the Box-Office Entertainment Award for Film Actress of the Year for two years in a row.

She received the FAMAS Award and the Film Academy of the Philippines Award for her role in One More Try in 2013.

Early life and background

Angelica Locsin Colmenares was born in Santa Maria, Bulacan, on April 23, 1985, to Angelo and Emma Colmenares. During the 1954 Asian Games in Manila, Locsin's father earned a bronze medal. Ella and Angelo are her younger siblings. Locsin has been reluctant to discuss her family history; she was estranged from her mother's birth until 2007 and has ties to a wealthy family in Marawi, Lanao del Sur, who traces her maternal line. Locsin and her siblings were raised by their father, who was later diagnosed with complete blindness. Locsin has expressed regret for her father's hospitalization at the start of his illness. She has a close relationship with her father and credits him with being "instrumental" to her triumphs.

Locsin was educated at University of Santo Tomas High School, where she competed for the varsity swimming team. She was seen running errands at SM City North EDSA by a talent scout who arranged for her to audition for television commercials during this period. She began studying acting and attended workshops hosted by ABS-CBN's talent management arm Star Magic after high school. She then applied for a role in the teen soap opera G-mik (1999).

Personal life

Locsin was in a six-month relationship with actor Miko Sotto before he died from a tragic crash at his high-rise apartment building in Mandaluyong in December 2003. "I had to let go no matter how tough or painful it was," Locsin said of his death. "I must keep living" is a word that comes to mind. Locsin was romantically involved with high-profile celebrities, including Miko Sotto, her Majika co-star Dennis Trillo, former footballer Phil Younghusband, and actor Luis Manzano from 2005 to 2016. Locsin began dating professional poker player and film director Neil Arce in September 2017. They got engaged in June 2019 and married two years later in a civil wedding on July 26, 2021.

Angel Locsin Career

Career

In the 2000 biographical drama Ping Lacson: Super Cop, Locsin made her film debut as the teenage Robina Gokongwei. In the second season of the teen drama Click, she signed a GMA Network management contract and made her first television appearance as a series regular. She appeared on the series from March 2002 to June 2003. Locsin continued his appearances in various television shows, including Ang Ikaw (2002), Twin Hearts (2003), and Love to Love (2003). Mano Po 2: My Home (2002) and My Love (2003), she appeared in the second and third installments of the Mano Po film franchise.

Locsin's breakthrough role in the fantasy action film Mulawin (2004) was as an avian-human hybrid protagonist. Redgie Magno, a GMA Network executive, first met Maxene Magalona for the role, but Locsin took the lead at Magalona's suggestion. Dominic Zapata, the show's producer, wanted the idea of mythology to be a "break from Tagalized soaps," but the show's "innovation" was still focusing on the lead characters. Locsin appeared in the Ravelo Komiks Universe series Darna (2005), based on Mars Ravelo's comics superheroine of the same name. Locsin was initially hesitant about the role because it required her to leave Mulawin and, she worried that if she left the series would end prematurely if she did not. Locsin agreed to the scheme after network executives encouraged her to participate. She trained in karate, wushu, and street combat to prepare. The series received positive feedback; Locsin's portrayal was lauded; Nestor Torre Jr. of the Philippine Daily Inquirer described the installation as "modern and trailblazing," and Locsin's "strong presence" was lauded. "The [show's] triumph can be attributed to [Locsin], as she attracts every block and wing of Pinoy society, as Pepe Diokno, a Philippine Daily Inquirer, said." Darna received the highest Nielsen ratings for a Filipino television series pilot episode during its premiere, a reported 47.1 percent viewership. Locsin revived the role of Alwina in Mulawin's film version later this year.

Locsin appeared as a sorceress in the fantasy film Majika alongside Dennis Trillo in 2006. Mikee Cojuangco-Jaworski, a co-star and equestrienne, trained extensively in horseback riding to be fit for the role. The performance was a critical failure; Torre rated it as "less than magical": "Unfortunately, the show is so visual that the gifted actors don't have much opportunity to show what they can do." Locsin appeared in three editions with Richard Gutierrez from 2006 to 2007. She appeared in Mac Alejandre's romantic comedy I Will Always Love You as the love interest of Gutierrez's character in the first. She appeared in Mano Po 5: Gua Ai Di (2006), the Mano Po film collection's fifth installment. Locsin's coming-of-age drama The Promise (2007), loosely based on Emily Bront's 1847 novel Wuthering Heights, depicted a woman who falls in love with her adoptive brother. Critics blasted Locsin's step into adult roles, "inadequate" and "embarrassing," according to critic Elyas Salanga, while critic Elyas Salanga found the film's narrative "typical" and "cliché." In the action adventure film Asian Treasures (2007), she was next portrayed opposite Robin Padilla. In an episode of the anthology film Malaya Mo Kaya, she appeared to be a physically impaired victim of violence. Locsin's appearance earned her the Best Single Performance by an Actress award.

After signing on to ABS-CBN's 2008 supernatural drama series Lobo, Locsin rejected the title role in the television remake of Marimar. Lyka Raymundo, a young lycanthrope trapped in a war between wolf factions, was depicted by her. She found the task difficult, but felt that the experience had honed her acting skills. For the series, she received an International Emmy Award for Best Actress. Locsin and Piolo Pascual were ranchers struggling with financial hardships set in Bukidnon and Darwin, Northern Territory, Rory Quintos-directed romantic drama Love Me Again (2009). Locsin, her family's sole breadwinner, believes that certain aspects of her character resemble her own. Karen Caliwara, a film critic, called Locsin's performance an improvement over her previous appearances and discovered "maturity in her portrayal." She rejoined Quintos in April 2009 for the comedy series Only You, based on the eponymous original Korean show.

In the second installment of the Lobo series, Imortal (2010), Locsin played Lia Ortega, the daughter of her lycan character. Bayani San Diego of the Philippine Daily Inquirer compared Imortal's vampire and werewolf stories to that of the Twilight Saga, adding that "creatures of the dark are all the rage today, given the popularity of True Blood and The Vampire Diaries." Despite journalist Earl Villanueva's praise for Locsin's "simple transition into a logical sequel," he said. Locsin's first film appearance in 2011 was in the movie-crossed romantic drama In the Name of Love, with director Olivia Lamasan, whose collaboration she found rewarding: "I've learned a lot, especially in terms of how film acting should be done... how you use your eyes, your place, and how to maximize camera angles." "I didn't know those things before." She learned many styles of ballroom dances and trained in pole dance for three months to prepare for the role of a courtesan. Julia Allende praised her appearance and teaming with Aga Muhlach, calling it "the most daring she [Locsin] has ever played" and calling it a "beautifully nuanced performance." Locsin received the Best Actress and the Box Office Entertainment Award for Best Actress and Actress of the Year for her work. Locsin appeared in the sitcom Toda Max later this year.

Locsin's first film release of 2012 was the romantic comedy Unofficially Yours, directed by Cathy Garcia-Molina. It starred John Lloyd Cruz as a sexually promiscuous journalist afraid of commitment. Though the reaction to the film varied, critics were highly appreciative of Locsin and Cruz's performances; Bibsy Carballo of The Philippine Star said that "their characterizations are sharp, their dialogue is clear and modern," but dismissed the film's plot as unoriginal; Torre found the leads' portrayals to be "earnest" and "committed" while writing for the Philippine Daily Inquirer. The film was Locsin's biggest commercial success to date, grossing 194 million (US$4.59 million) at the box office. The 2012 Metro Manila Film Festival featured One More Try, a family drama starring Locsin, and a woman's quest to reconnect with her estranged husband in order to be their son's stem cell donor. Critics applauded her performance; film critic Mark Ching called it "worthy" and "formidable"; Torre said her portrayal showed "no such inhibiting issue." Locsin was given the Best Actress Award at Box Office Entertainment, FAMAS, Luna, and Star Award for the role.

Locsin appeared in the ensemble comedy comedy Four Sisters and a Wedding in 2013. Bea Alonzo, Shaina Magdayao, and Toni Gonzaga performed together as siblings with deliberate intentions to discourage their brother from marrying. Rito Asilo of the Philippine Daily Inquirer was particularly wowed by her appearance, writing, "[Locsin] also does well in a narrow portrayal that lacks self-confidence and vanity, so you can imagine her stepping back when the spotlight is on her co-actresses." Locsin and Alonzo "lent an emotional weight to the film," Rappler's Carljoe Javier opined. Four Sisters and a Wedding made a commercial comeback, grossing 175 million (US$4.12 million) at the box office. Locsin received FAMAS and Star Award nominations for her film. She returned to television in 2014 as the lead actress in the drama series The Legal Wife. The Philippine Daily Inquirer was dismissive of the show's "mundane" and "predictable" theme, and Torre discovered Locsin's behavior to be intolerable and "too livid."

Locsin appeared in three productions in 2016 after a one-year absence on screen. Everything About Her, Joyce Bernal's debut, a comedy drama co-starring Vilma Santos, was her first publication. Locsin's and Santos' portrayals as "effortless, natural, and searing," according to Stephanie Mayo of the Daily Tribune; the Philippine Star lauded the cast's performance as "compelling" and described the film as a "fully-crafted family drama." Locsin received Best Support Actress at the Asia-Pacific Film Festival for her role in the film. She then appeared as a judge on the fifth season of the reality talent competition show Pilipinas Got Talent, based on the original British show franchise. She was in The Third Party, a film that depicts the tumultuous relationship in a throne. Locsin is "weighed down by her pushed, staccato delivery, and relies too much on knee-jerk realizations," Asilo said. "The film," Philbert Dyne wrote, "the film" seems to make its characters cry in lieu of telling their tales or allowing them to haveh out the mystery of what they're feeling."

Locsin's last film appearance in 2017 was the final installment of the Lobo series, La Luna Sangre. In the premiere episode, she reprised Lia Ortega from Imortal, and then reprised her role as Jacintha Magsaysay, a vigilante vampire. She returned as a judge for the sixth season of Pilipinas Got Talent in January 2018. Locsin began 2019 by appearing in The General's Daughter, an indoctrinated military nurse. Before filming began, she worked at the Armed Forces of the Philippines General Hospital, and in preparation, she was trained in Krav Maga, Muay Thai, and knife combat. Locsin wrote about her attempt to portray roles outside of mythology genres: "I try to humanize my character." Rhian is not a superhero. She has no powers. She has challenges, she has blunders, and she falls down, but she isn't given up." "She brought moral strength to her role," Mozart Pastrano of the Philippine Daily Inquirer wrote about Locsin, "She brought moral strength to her role, as well as uncommon physical stamina and skills." She has been nominated for both Best Actress and a Box Office Entertainment Award for Best Actress.

Locsin hosted the public service show Iba Yan in June 2020. Call My Agent, Erik Matti's television version of the French comedy series Call My Agent, will star her. The show will be broadcast on HBO Asia.
