Junior career

Murray's tennis coach from 11 to 17, Leon Smith, described Murray as "unbelievably athletic," while Murray attributes his motivation to his older brother Jamie's death. Murray won his age group at the Orange Bowl in 1999, a prestigious event for junior players. He won the Junior Orange Bowl championship twice in his 70-year history, beating Jimmy Connors, Jennifer Carrington, and Monica Seles.

Murray took off the Challenger and Futures circuit in July 2003. In his first tournament, he reached the quarterfinals of the Manchester Challenger. Murray won his first senior title by winning the Glasgow Futures event in September. He also qualified for the Edinburgh Futures event in the semi-finals.

Professional career

Murray debuted in 2005 at No. 1 in the United States, ranked No. 1 in the nation's highest position. 407, but when he first arrived in South America in January, he hurt his back and had to wait three months off.

Murray was seeded third for the 2014 Wimbledon Championship, behind Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, who were seeded first and second respectively, after strong grass court seasons in 2012 and 2013. He began his title defense by beating David Goffin and Blaz Rola in straight sets, defeating the former for only two games. Murray maintained his good form by defeating Roberto Bautista Agut and Kevin Anderson, the 27th and 20th seeds, in straight sets for his seventh consecutive Wimbledon quarter-final appearance. Murray's defense came to a halt as Grigor Dimitrov brought a 17 match winning streak to a halt on Wimbledon's grass (this includes the 2012 Olympics), limiting Murray's chances in the semi-finals for the first time since 2008. Murray lost his first round robin match to Kei Nishikori but defeated Milos Raonic in his second match. However, he lost his final group match against Federer in straight sets and only managed to win one game against him, his first loss since losing to Djokovic in the 2007 Miami Masters, effectively ending him from the tournament.

Murray and Sem Green decided on a long-term backroom staff, education partner Dani Vallverdu, and fitness coach Jez Green after the season came to an end. They had been with him for five and seven years respectively, but they were both dissatisfied with the lack of information regarding Mauresmo's appointment. Murray also played in the inaugural season of the International Premier Tennis League, representing the Manila Mavericks, who had drafted him as a hero in February. Murray was in the first three matches of the tournament, which were all played in Manila.

Murray began his year by winning an exhibition exhibition in Abu Dhabi. Heather Watson continued his Hopman Cup in straight sets, and they finished second in their group behind Poland, despite winning all his singles matches in straight sets.

Rafael Nadal and Kei Nishikori come in fifth, 5 behind Rafael Nadal and Kei Nishikori. Murray then played against the United States in Glasgow, Scotland. For the second time in a row, he won both his matches against Donald Young and John Isner, allowing the United Kingdom to advance to the quarter-finals for the second time in a row against the United States, with a 3–2 advantage.

Murray reached the semi-finals of the 2015 Indian Wells, defeating Tim Henman's record of 496 career victories to win the most Open Era titles for a British man. Despite this, he lost in straight sets to Djokovic for his sixth straight defeat. Murray won his 500th match in his career, along the way to become the first British player to win 500 or more in the Open Era. Djokovic defeated him in the final, this time in three sets. Murray started Jonas Björkman as a mentor in a five-week trial to help out in times when Mauresmo was not available because she had only been working with him for 25 weeks. However, Mauresmo had told Murray that she was pregnant and had announced at the end of April that Björkman would be his main tutor for all of the Australian Open Court Season and all of the US hard court swing, although Mauresmo will only be with the team for Wimbledon.

Murray claimed his first ATP clay court title at the 2015 BMW Open. He defeated German Philipp Kohlschreiber in three close sets to become the first Briton since Buster Mottram in 1976 to win a tour level clay court competition. After winning his second and third finals over top ten opponents on clay against Raonic and Nishikori this week, he reached his second final on clay at the Madrid Open. Rafael Nadal claimed his first Madrid title on clay and the first-ever clay court Masters 1000 title in straight sets in the final. Murray's victory was his first over Nadal, Federer, or Djokovic since Wimbledon 2013, and it was his first over Nadal on a clay court.

Murray continued his winning streak at the Italian Open by defeating Jeremy Chardy in straight sets in his first match but then collapsed due to exhaustion after playing nine matches in the space of ten days. Murray reached his third semi-final appearance at the French Open, but lost in five sets to Djokovic after threatening to comeback from two sets to love down, snapping his 15 match winning streak on clay.

Murray claimed his fourth Queen's Club title, defeating Kevin Anderson in straight sets in the final to kick off his grass court career. Murray lost just two sets in his third grand slam of the year, the 2015 Wimbledon Championships, defeating Roger Federer in semi-finals. Murray lost in straight sets to the Swiss veteran, who gained just one break point in the entire match.

Murray, a Wimbledon legend, has returned to Queen's Club to face France in the Davis Cup quarter-finals. When James Ward lost in straight sets to Gilles Simon in straight sets, the United Kingdom dropped 1–0 down, but Murray ended the tie with a victory over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Murray then partnered with his brother Jamie to win the doubles rubber, coming back from a set down to defeat Tsonga and Nicolas Mahut in four sets, giving Britain a crucial 2–1 advantage going into the final day. He then met Simon in the fourth rubber, and after being a set and a bust down, he quickly found his form in the second set and then claimed in four sets, winning in 13 of the last 15 games (with Simon suffering from an ankle injury). With a 3–1 advantage over France, Great Britain won their first Davis Cup semi-final since 1981.

Murray qualified for the Citi Open for the first time since 2006, being the top seed and favourite to win the tournament. However, he was disqualified in his first match, losing to No. Despite being officiating for the match, 53 Teymuraz Gabashvili was in a final set tiebreak. In doubles, he partnered Daniel Nestor, but they lost in the first round to the fourth seeds, Rohan Bopanna and Florin Mergea, who also in three sets.

As the world No. 1 is on display, he is the world No. 1. Murray, 2, was in the ATP World Tour Finals in London, and was drawn into the Ilie Nescstase team with David Ferrer, Rafael Nadal, and Stan Wawrinka. Murray's victory over Ruben Bemelman in straight sets lifted the Great Britain level in the final after Kyle Edmund lost the first singles rubber in five sets at Ghent. He and Jamie then partnered his brother Jamie in a four-set victory over the pairing of Steve Darcis and David Goffin before defeating Goffin in the reverse singles on Sunday, securing their first Davis Cup title since 1936 and their tenth overall. Murray also became the third person since the new Davis Cup style was introduced to win all eight of his singles rubbers in a Davis Cup season, after John McEnroe and Mats Wilander.

Murray started his 2016 season by playing in the Hopman Cup, teaming up with Heather Watson again. However, they finished second in their group after losing their tie to eventual champions Nick Kyrgios and Daria Gavrilova from Australia.

Murray was competing in his first competitive tournament of 2016 at the Australian Open, where he was aiming to win his first title after four runners-up finishes. Murray went on to finish at the first Masters 1000 of the year at the 2016 Indian Wells Masters. Murray qualified as the second seed of the 2016 Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters clay court season. Murray struggled in his second round match against Pierre-Hugues Herbert, but Murray took third place in 3 sets. Murray lost in his third round match against 16th seed Benoît Paire, despite being down a set and two breaks. Murray also participated in the third set of the game, but Murray came through in 3 sets. Murray then defeated 10th seed Milos Raonic in straight sets in the quarter-finals. Despite winning the first set and eventual champion Rafael Nadal, Murray failed to 5th seed and eventual champion Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals. Murray was crowned the 2nd seed and the defending champion at the 2016 Mutua Madrid Open. Murray won in three sets over Radek tpánek. After losing 16th seed Gilles Simon and 8th seed Tomá Berdych in straight sets, he advanced to the semi-finals. Murray beat Nadal in straight sets in the semi-finals, defeating Murray who had lost to earlier this year. Murray defeated Novak Djokovic in three sets in the final. Murray fell from second to third in the ATP rankings as a result of his defeat. Mauresmo and Murray announced that they had "mutually agreed" to end their coaching relationship shortly after.

Murray regained his top-two status after winning the 2016 Internazionali BNL d'Italia for his 1st title and 36th overall. He beat Mikhail Kukushkin, Jérémy Chardy, 12th seed, Lucas Pouille, and number one seed Djokovic in straight sets. This was his first victory over clay over Djokovic, and he became the first British player since Virginia Wade in 1971 to win the title and the first British man since George Patrick Hughes in 1931. Murray then advanced to the French Open, where he failed in the first round of two tek and French wildcard Mathias Bourgue matches. He advanced to the quarter-finals against Ivo Karlovi and John Isner, where he defeated home favorite Richard Gasquet in four sets to advance to the semi-finals against defending champion Stanislas Wawrinka. Murray defeated Wawrinka in four sets to become the first male British player to play in the French Open final since Bunny Austin in 1937. He was unable to win his first French Open final after losing in four sets to Djokovic.

Ivan Lendl, Murray's coach, wanted to return to his old position in June 2016. Murray was the 1st seed and the defending champion of the 2016 Aegon Championships, starting his grass season. Murray defeated Nicolas Mahut in straight sets despite being forced to reset a point in the first set and three set points in the second set. In straight sets, he beat countryman Alja Bedene. He then had three set wins over Kyle Edmund, another countryman, and No. 1. Marin ili, the 5 seed Marin ili. Milos Raonic, the third seed, was down a set and a break in the final. Murray's second title in 2016 was still outstanding, winning his 5th Queen's Club Championships, his second title in 2016. Murray was the 2nd seed in the 2016 Wimbledon Championships, his third major championship of the year. In the first four rounds, Murray defeated Liam Broady, Lu Yen-hsun, John Millman, and Nick Kyrgios in straight sets. Murray won in straight sets over 12th seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in five sets in the quarter-final and tenth seed Tomá Berdych in straight sets. Murray claimed his second Wimbledon title and third major title overall on September 10th. His Wimbledon crown was his third title of the season and 38th Tour victory.

Murray appeared at the Rio Olympic Games for the first time. He became the first male or female to win two consecutive gold medals in tennis singles events by defeating Juan Martn del Potro in the final, which lasted more than four hours. The victory was his third straight title and his fourth title of the season. Murray progressed to the US Open in the first four rounds, defeating Lukas Rosol, Marcel Granollers, Paolo Lorenzi, and Grigor Dimitrov. Despite having a two sets to one lead, his campaign came to an end as he lost in five sets to sixth seed Kei Nishikori.

In Glasgow against Argentina, his next game was the 2016 Davis Cup semi-finals. In five sets, he lost the first rubber against Juan Martn del Potro. Jamie Jones, who suffered in the second rubber, joined his brother Jamie to defeat del Potro and Leonardo Mayer in four sets. He then won the fourth rubber against Guido Pella in straight sets, although Great Britain later lost the tie. Murray captured the China Open for his fifth title of 2016 and 40th tour title. He defeated Andreas Seppi, Andrey Kuznetsov, Kyle Edmund, David Ferrer, and Grigor Dimitrov in straight sets. Murray defended this feat by winning in straight sets over Steve Johnson, Lucas Pouille, David Goffin, Gilles Simon, and Roberto Bautista Agut all advanced to his 13th masters title and 3rd title in Shanghai. This was his 6th title of the year and drew him even with the former No. 66. 1 Stefan Edberg at No. 1 - This is the first time a person has been ranked at no. 1. With 41 Tour titles each, 15 of the Open Age titles list are ranked No. 15 on the Open Era titles list.

Murray won the Erste Bank Open for his seventh tour title of the 2016 season, extending his winning streak to 15 consecutive match victories. In the first two rounds, his tournament got off to a stalemate with three-set victories over Martin Klizan and Gilles Simon. Murray earned the final after a decisive victory over John Isner in the quarter-finals and a walkover due to David Ferrer's withdrawal due to a leg injury. For his third title in succession, he defeated Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Murray won seven titles in a single season for the first time in his career and climbed to solo 15th on the all-time list of singles titles in the Open Era, breaking a tie with former world No. Jeremy Weis. Murray was honoured in the 2017 New Year Honours for services to tennis and charities, making him the UK's youngest knight at 29. He began the season with a defeat in the Mubadala World Tennis Championship to David Goffin, who won over Milos Raonic in the third-place play-off. Murray reached the final of the Qatar Open but lost in three sets to Novak Djokovic despite saving three championship points. In the fourth round of the Australian Open he lost in four sets to Mischa Zverev.

Murray has returned to action at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships in February.
