Andros Darryl Townsend (born 16 July 1991) is an English professional footballer who plays for Crystal Palace and the English national team. Townsend was initially loaned out to several League One and then Championship clubs, as well as limited Tottenham appearances before he earned his Premier League debut on September 16, 2012.

Townsend established himself as a Tottenham player for the 2013–14 and 2014–15 seasons after limited appearances and then a half-season loan to Premier League club Queens Park Rangers.

He came out of favour at Tottenham Hotspur and, following a short time at Newcastle United in the 2015-16 season, he moved to Crystal Palace in the summer of 2016. Townsend made his first England cap on October 11, 2013, making thirteen appearances and scoring three goals in his senior international career.

Personal life

Townsend was born in Leytonstone, Greater London, England. He is the son of Troy Townsend, the CEO of Kick It Out. He is of paternal Jamaican and maternal Greek Cypriot descent. He was born in Chingford and is a lifelong Tottenham fan. Rush Croft Sports College was a sponsor of Rush Croft Sports College. Kurtis' half-brother died in a car crash aged 10.

Townsend's youngest players were caught singing Ben E. King's "Stand By Me" with the rest of the Tottenham youth players in the dressing room, which became a hit internet video.

In a December 2019 interview, Townsend admitted that he had been a problem gambler who enjoyed online betting on football. On the night of a play-off game for Birmingham, he lost £46,000 on a single bet. After being jailed for breaching the FA's anti-betting legislation, he went to counselling.

Andros Townsend Career

Club career

At the age of eight, Townsend joined the Tottenham Hotspur academy. In March 2009, he went on loan to Yeovil Town, making his football league debut against Milton Keynes Dons as a teammate of Spurs academy player Jonathan Obika. Yeovil avoided relegation thanks to his ten appearances and one goal.

Under new manager Harry Redknapp, Townsend joined the senior Tottenham team. He signed Leyton Orient's loan from August to December in 2009, and after which he returned to Tottenham, extending his month of loan. Townsend's second round, with three opposing players taking the field for a 3-3 draw against Yeovil, ending in the opposition manager's chastizing and bringing him down with a professional foul.

Townsend's debutant at Tottenham Hotspur on January 14, 2010, the club's Milton Keynes Dons, took him on loan until the end of the season, but only after two months due to injuries. He had scored twice in nine games for the Dons. Townsend's debut for Spurs came at the end of the season.

Townsend signed another season-long loan in 2010-upswich Town, but it was terminated on December 20th because Redknapp said he hadn't been playing enough. He had played 16 times, scoring once.

Townsend's debut in a third round FA Cup match against Charlton Athletic on Monday was on Monday; he scored the first goal and was named Man of the Match. This was his only game for Tottenham this season, with two more loan spells occurring. On January 20, 2011, he joined Watford on loan until the end of the season, but before that date, he was banned from playing three times. Townsend went on loan to a Championship club until the end of the season on March 7, this time Millwall. He said in April that he would stay at the club beyond the loan period. He scored twice in 11 appearances.

Townsend made six appearances in the competition in the first half of Tottenham's 2011–12 season. In his second match of the season, he scored his second goal for the club against Shamrock Rovers on December 15, 2011, winning a curled shot from outside the box. He signed a deal extension on December 23rd, extending his stay as a Tottenham player until the end of the 2016 season.

Townsend joined Leeds United on loan until the end of the season, but his agent said he was unhappy at the club, so he transferred the loan to Birmingham City in February. He made seven appearances for Leeds, including what he described as "a dream debut" and scored once. He made fifteen league appearances and one in Birmingham's second leg of their loss to Blackpool in the promotion play-off semi-finals.

Townsend stayed with Tottenham in the first half of the 2012–13 season, with the club now under new manager André Villas-Boas, who took over Redknapp in the summer. He made his Premier League debut on September 16th with a late substitution appearance. Despite being a fourth time in the Premier League, these were all late substitute appearances. He made five appearances outside of the league, twice in the League Cup and FA Cup, and three times in the Europa League. In a 3–0 win over Carlisle United in the League Cup third round, he scored his third Tottenham goal with a "blow left-foot shot into the bottom corner from just outside the field."

Townsend joined Redknapp to Queens Park Rangers on loan until the end of the season on January 31, 2013. He made 12 appearances for the club, including a Man of the Match appearance on his debut, two goals in March, a dipping volley from outside the penalty area in a 3–1 win at home to Sunderland, and an equalizing deflection in a 3–2 loss to Aston Villa. QPR were eventually relegated, and Townsend's return to his parent club was reinstated.

Townsend's second Premier League match of the 2013–14 season has been played, with 25 in the league, including 25 in the league. In a 5–0 victory over Dinamo Tbilisi in the Europa League (his first match of the season) and his first in the Premier League in a 2–0 victory over Aston Villa on October 20, 2013. Townsend came under the care of his third Tottenham manager, after Villas-Boas was recalled by Tim Sherwood in the middle of the season.

Sherwood's deal was terminated at the end of the season, and Townsend's new boss, Mauricio Pochettino, started the 2014–15 season. He made 35 appearances, scoring five goals, but was limited to only 17 appearances in the league, after being unable to hold down a starting position until the second half of the season. In the 2015 League Cup Final at Wembley Stadium, he got off as Tottenham lost 2–0 to Chelsea.

Townsend was suspended from the squad after a touchline spat with the club's fitness coach on November 4, 2015, having not started a league match of the 2015-16 season. He apologised, and Pochettino allowed him to return to the squad by November 17th, announcing that the investigation was over and he was ready to be selected again. Following the incident, the last of which was on December 10, he was an unemployed substitute three times, but he did not make any more first-team appearances for Tottenham.

Tottenham decided a transfer fee with Newcastle United for Townsend on January 26, 2016, despite that not starting a league match. Townsend had already posted a goodbye tweet before the fee was revealed, and added: "As soon as I learned of Newcastle's interest, they were the only club I wanted to join"; "center-forward and left wing at Newcastle were two of the best positions you can play in football." I have the opportunity. I could never turn it down. I can't wait to play at St James' Park for the first time. The transfer was announced the next day, a five-and-a-half year deal, but the club refused to disclose the fee, despite the club's refusal to disclose it. Newcastle head coach Steve McClaren, who has been on the job as Townsend's new boss, said he is a "winger with an old-fashioned style." He can play on the right or the left, is a quick, direct, and loves taking on defenders and crossing the ball." Newcastle had been trying to borrow Townsend on loan for a week, but then had a transfer bid rejected for £10.5 million, according to Sky Sports.

Despite Newcastle's disappointing team result in an away loss, the next match, his home debut, was greeted with a standing ovation after a Man of the Match performance that saw Newcastle leap out of the relegation places. In a 5–1 away loss to Chelsea, the club's first goal came in his third match, a shot from just outside the stadium, but it was just a 90th minute consolation goal.

Following Newcastle's transfer to the Championship, Townsend joined Crystal Palace in a five-year deal on July 1st. Palace renewed his £13 million release clause just six months after he arrived from Tottenham Hotspur. For his first season with Palace, he was given the number 17 shirt. However, Townsend was reassigned the number 10 shirt that had previously been worn by Bolasie after Yannick Bolasie left for Everton. In the Premier League, Townsend defeated West Bromwich Albion 1–0 on August 13th. In a 4–1 victory over Stoke City in the league on September 18, the player scored his first goal for the club.

Townsend defeated Manchester City 3–2 in the league on December 22, 2018, a 30-yard volley. His strike was named Premier League Goal of the Month for December and Premier League Goal of the Season for December and Premier League Goal of the Season, as well as the shortlist for the 2019 FIFA Puskás Award.

On the date of his two-year deal with Everton, Townsend agreed to Everton.

Townsend made his debut on August 20,21, assisting Richarlison's goal as Everton came from behind to beat Southampton 3–1 on the first day of the season. Townsend scored the winning goal in an EFL Cup round two match against Huddersfield Town on August 24, 2021. Townsend scored his first Premier League goal for Everton on September 13th, defeating Burnley 3-1; this goal would also win him the Premier League Goal of the Month award.

International career

Townsend has competed for England under the age of 16, 17, and under the age of 19. He appeared in three times for the under-16s between 2006 and 2007, making his debut in a 1–1 draw away from Wales on October 20, 2006, and his last game in a 2–0 away loss to Germany in April 2007. In a 6–1 victory over Northern Ireland in August 2007, he scored twice on his under-17 debut, and went on to make six appearances, the last in a 0–0 draw with Portugal on February 5th. Townsend's first two appearances at under-19 level came in the 2009 European Championship's group stage; he was an unused substitute in the final, which England lost to Ukraine. He appeared in two games in 2010, one as a starter in a friendly and three times as a substitute in qualifiers for the 2010 season.

Townsend was given his first call up to the England under-21 squad in October 2012 for the Euro 2013 play-off matches against Serbia. He made his debut in the first leg as a 65th-minute substitute for Liverpool's Raheem Sterling. In 2012 and 2013, he also participated in two U21 friendlies.

The Football Association charged Townsend in May 2013 for suspected betting fraud. He then voluntarily dropped from England's squad for the forthcoming European Under-21 Championship finals. He later admitted to charges of breaking football betting laws under FA jurisdictions. He was fined £18,000 and suspended for four months dating back to 23 May, with three months suspended until July 2016.

In September 2013, Townsend's first call-up to the senior England squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Moldova and Ukraine. He made his senior debut against Montenegro in a World Cup qualifier on October 11th, scoring his third goal of a 4–1 victory with a "low swerving finish" outside the penalty area after 78 minutes, two minutes before being substituted, and was named man of the match. He earned his second cap against Poland four days later, while still playing almost every part of the 2–0 home win. In a 5–0 win over San Marino on September 9, England defeated them in the Euro 2016 qualification tournament, the second goal in the second round of the season. His third appearance in England was his third goal; he scored the equalizer in the 79th minute against Italy on March 31, 2015, having arrived seven minutes earlier in a friendly match that ended 1–1. The 20-yard footballer was described as a "sweet right-foot sprint into the bottom corner" right away after the match, and Townsend's response to Paul Merson revealed on Twitter after he said that Townsend's club form did not justify him being in the England team.

Andros Townsend claims points deductions make a 'MOCKERY of the Premier League' after Everton were punished for a second time this season over breaching financial rules

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 9, 2024
Luton star Andros Townsend has claimed Premier League clubs being deducted points make a 'mockery' of the top flight - after Everton were sanctioned for the second time this season. The Toffees were dealt another blow in their turbulent season as they were handed a further two-point deduction by the Premier League for breaching their financial rules, having already been docked 10 points in November.  That penalty was later reduced to six on appeal, before the club were hit with a second breach, which relates to the three-year accounting period ending in the 2022-23 campaign. The first was connected to the three-year period that ended in the 2021-22 season.

Everton and Nottingham Forest's points deductions'make a MOCKERY of the Premier League,' Andros Townsend says, as they face the psychological challenges that come along with the relegation war

In a vehement attack, Luton Town's players called the fines "nonsense" and "make a joke of the Premier League." He also shared how teams would bring an additional layer of confusion to the relegation war, making it more difficult for teams physically. Everton was disappointed with a 10-point deduction in November but has since received four points back, while Forest was barred from four points earlier this month. Both fines were imposed on Premier League profits and sustainability.
