Ana de Armas Life

Ana Celia de Armas Caso (born 30 April 1988) is a Cuban actress.

She made her acting debut in 2006 in the Spanish film Una rosa de Francia, and later on to appear in El Internado (2007–2010).

She appeared in Knock Knock, her first American film, as well as roles in Hands of Stone and War Dogs in 2016. Armas was a breakout star in Blade Runner 2049 (2017), and she has received acclaim for her leading role as a nurse in the mystery film Knives Out (2019).

The latter was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Motion Picture Comedy or Musical.

Early life

De Armas was born in Havana, Cuba, and raised in Santa Cruz, Cuba's tiny city. Her maternal grandparents immigrated from Spain to Cuba. Ramón's father served in various positions, including banker, tutor, school principal, and deputy mayor of a small town. He did philosophy at a Soviet university before. Ana's mother worked in the Ministry of Education's human resources section. De Armas has one older brother, Javier, a New York-based photographer who was deposed by Cuban police due to his critical stance on Dec. 349 and his links to artists under government surveillance. Though the Armas grew up with food rationing, fuel shortages, and power blackouts during Cuba's Special Period, she has portrayed her childhood as joyful.

De Armas had no internet access as a teenager and had no idea of popular culture outside of Cuba. On Saturday and the Sunday movie matinee, she was allowed to watch "20 minutes of cartoons." She did not own a "video or DVD player" and watched Hollywood movies in her neighbor's apartment. She memorized and performed monologues in front of the mirror and decided she wanted to be an actress at age 12. In 2002, she successfully auditioned for the National Theatre of Cuba in Havana. She has been known to take the "rigorous" route more often. She made three films as an undergraduate. Because Cuban graduates are forbidden from leaving the country until completing three years of compulsory service to the community, she dropped out a four-year drama program months before presenting her final thesis. She immigrated to Madrid at the age of 18, with Spanish citizenship through her maternal grandparents, and wanted to work in acting.

Personal life

De Armas began dating with Spanish actor Marc Clotet in mid-2010, and the two married in Costa Brava in July 2011. They divorced in early 2013. During a period from early 2015 to late 2016, she was briefly engaged to American talent agent Franklin Latt. After a meeting on the set of Deep Water in late 2019, Armas dated American actor Ben Affleck from March 2020 to January 2021.

De Armas has dual citizenship in Cuba and Spain. She moved to Los Angeles at the age of 26, and now lives in New York City as of 2022.

Ana de Armas Career

Career

In Manuel Gutiérrez Aragón's romantic drama Una rosa de Francia (2006), de Armas had a leading role opposite lex González as a youth in her native Cuba. After meeting de Armas at a birthday party with his children, Cuban actor Jorge Perugorra suggested that the filmmaker investigate Armas for the role. During her audition, the director visited de Armas' drama school, causing the sixteen-year-old to inform her that the job was hers. She traveled to Spain as part of a film promotion tour and was introduced to Juan Lanja, who would later become her Spanish agent. She appeared in El el pérez's Madrigal (2007), a film directed at night without the permission of her drama school tutors.

De Armas moved to Madrid at the age of 18. Luis San Narciso, the casting director, met with her within two weeks of arriving, who had not seen her in Una rosa de Francia. In El Internado, he portrayed Carolina in the teen drama, in which she appeared for six seasons from 2007 to 2010. The television show, which was based in a boarding school, gained a following among viewers and made de Armas a celebrity figure in Spain. She appeared in the hit coming-of-age comedy Mentiras y Gordas (2009), when filming was halted. Despite El Internado's fame, de Armas felt portrayed and was mainly offered youth roles. In its second season, she begged to be written out of the program.

De Armas was encouraged to return to Spain to star in seventeen episodes of the historical drama Hispania (2010–2011) after living in New York City for a few months to learn English. She appeared in Antonio Trashorras' horror films El callejón (2011) and Anabel (2015), as well as the drama Por un pueso (2014). De Armas attended workshops at Tomaz Pandur's Madrid theatre company and became "very worried" about the lack of energy in her career during a long period without acting work.

She and her newly hired Hollywood agent encouraged her to move to Los Angeles. When de Armas first arrived in Los Angeles in 2014, she had to start her career "from scratch." She spoke very little English and said, at early auditions, she often "didn't even know what [she] was saying." She spent four months learning English, not wanting to be limited to Latina actresses' exclusives. In her first Hollywood film, Eli Roth's erotic thriller Knock Knock Knock Knock Knock (2014), she starred opposite Keanu Reeves and learned her lines phonetically. Despite giving a glowing review of the film, Randy Cordova of the Arizona Republic found de Armas to be "unconvincing" in her role. Reeves called Armas to invite her to act in and produce the thriller Daughter of God in Spanish-language. Producer Mark Downie hoped that the film would be a star vehicle for de Armas, but it was badly edited due to executive meddling, de Armas' former starring role was reduced. Exposed was eventually released in 2016. Although she was "appealing" on her part, de Armas was unable to articulate her "character's intense emotional needs," according to Frank Scheck of The Hollywood Reporter.

De Armas appeared in Todd Phillips' War Dogs (2016) as the wife of an arms dealer and a soldier, and she learned her lines phonetically. IndieWire's David Ehrlich found her to be "memorable in a thankless position." In the biopic Hands of Stone (2016) as the wife of Panamanian boxer Roberto Durán, she appeared opposite Édgar Ramrez. Hands of Stone was the first Hollywood film de Armas had shot despite its postponement. When she was still living in Madrid, director Jonathan Jakubowicz called her and asked her to audition for the Spanish-language component. Armas was described as "a remarkably charismatic presence" in the film, according to Christy Lemire of RogerEbert.com. However, except for a few rare scenes, she has little to do other than perform as the dutiful wife."

Joi, the holographic AI girlfriend of Ryan Gosling's character, played a key role in Denis Villeneuve's futuristic thriller Blade Runner 2049 (2017). "She brings three-dimensional warmth to a character that is essentially a digital projection," Mark Kermode of The Guardian said. "Any Joi appears, the film's imaginative heart races to race," Anthony Lane of The New Yorker found her to be "wondrous": "every Joi appears, the film's imaginative heart races." Although the film was initially thought of as a breakthrough, the film failed commercially, and de Armas spent the majority of the year in Cuba, where she bought a house. She also appeared in 2017 as the love interest to Scott Eastwood's character. "She has more kick-ass charisma than her thankless sidekick job might suggest," Stephen Dalton of The Hollywood Reporter wrote.

De Armas appeared in John Hillcoat's medical drama Corazón in 2018. In the short film, she played a Dominican woman with heart disease and was promoted by Montefiore Medical Center to raise organ donation concerns. Although de Armas' scenes opposite Himesh Patel in the 2019 romantic comedy Yesterday were included in the film's trailer, they were removed from the final product. Although de Armas was "absolute" in her scenes, Danny Boyle said that the introduction of a love triangle subplot did not go well with audiences.

De Armas' role as an immigrant nurse in the ensemble murder mystery film Knives Down (2019), written and directed by Rian Johnson, was widely praised and marked a breakthrough for the actress. When first approached about the initiative, she was unimpressive about the prospect of playing a stereotypical "Latina caretaker," but soon realized that her character was "so much more than that." "The film's best work comes from its least well-known member, the Cuban de Armas, who is in possession of the difficult challenge of making goodness exciting," Tom Shone of The Times noted. Benjamin Lee of The Guardian said her "striking" appearance left a "lasting impression." The film was a huge box office hit. De Armas was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Motion Picture Comedy or Musical, as well as the Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actress and Best Cast with the cast.

In 2020, De Armas appeared in four films in the United States. She played a supporting role in Joel Kinnaman's character in The Informer, as the wife of Joel Kinnaman's wife. "Her thin presence has become all the more prominent in the aftermath of her Knives Out fame," Guy Lodge of Variety said. In the noir crime drama The Night Clerk, she appeared as a femme fatale. RogerEbert.com's Brian Tallerico said the film had "no idea" what to do with her "blinding charisma," while Katie Rife of The AV Club said it would be remembered "if at all" as a film de Armas was way too good for." Carolina Larriera, a United Nations official and the partner of diplomat Sérgio Vieira de Mello, starred opposite Wagner Moura in the Netflix biopic Sergio (2020) as Carolina Larriera, a United States official and the partner of diplomat Sérgio Vieira de Mello. While Jessica Kiang of Variety said she imbued the role "with an intelligence and will that makes her more than just Mello's romantic foil," John DeFore of The Hollywood Reporter discovered her "magnetic." In Olivier Assayas' Netflix spy thriller Wasp Network, De Armas reunited with Moura to play the wife of one of the Cuban Five. The film was shot in Cuba; it was de Armas' first work in her home country after leaving as an adolescent. Glenn Kenny of The New York Times dubbed her "superb" while Variety's Jay Weissberg described her as "a joyous, bewitching presence whose career seems to be destined for the big time."

De Armas reunited with Daniel Craig in 2021 to act a Bond princess in Cary Joji Fukunaga's No Time to Die. With de Armas in mind, Fukunaga developed the image of a Cuban CIA agent. The character was described as bubbly and "very irresponsible" by the actress. Paloma's character in No Time to Die seemed to have no training but she was surprisingly skilled. No Time to Die was a commercial success, grossing $774.2 million around the world and receiving glowing feedback. "Witty and unworldly turn" was lauded by Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian. De Armas appeared in Adrian Lyne's erotic thriller Deep Water, based on Patricia Highsmith's book. In an open marriage, she and Ben Affleck play a couple. De Armas appeared in the Russo brothers' Netflix action thriller The Gray Man in 2022, alongside Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans. Neither Deep Water nor The Gray Man were particularly popular with critics and audiences.

In the Netflix biopic Blonde (2022), based on Joyce Carol Oates' biographical fiction book of the same name, De Armas portrayed Marilyn Monroe. Dominik recalled de Armas' appearance in Knock Knock Knock Knock, and although she went through a lengthy casting process, Dominik got the role for her after the first audition. De Armas worked with a dialect coach for a year, read Oates' book, and then learned hundreds of photographs, videos, audio recordings, and films to prepare for the role. Despite criticism of her casting due to her Spanish accent, de Armas' appearance was lauded; Catherine Bray of Empire described de Armas' appearance as "powerful," while Richard Lawson of Vanity Fair remarked that "De Armas is relentlessly committed to the position, channeling every torrent of tears, screams, and traumas" in every torrent of tears, screams, and traumas."

De Armas will appear in the Apple TV+ film Ghosted, as well as Chris Evans, in which she replaced Scarlett Johansson.
