Macdonald's sophomore album came out in 2009. "Some of the sounds are just amazing, and we've managed to persuade one of my favorite artists to whack some stuff on them," she said. "You'll have to wait and see." On the track "This Pretty Face," the artist in question was Paul Weller, who played electric guitar on the track "Love Love" and piano and bass guitar. It was called A Curious Thing and first published on March 8, 2010.

The album was preceded by the debut of "Don't Tell Me That It's Over" by it's first single, a week earlier on March 1, 2010. Amy performed it on BBC Radio 2 on Monday, and it was broadcast on UK radio on January 11, and she appeared on BBC Radio 2 the same day. Life in a Beautiful Light, Macdonald's third album, was released on June 11, 2012. Following a "lovely year off" tour in favor of A Curious Thing, Macdonald began to write Life in a Beautiful Light. Macdonald had no time to write songs on her second album while touring with This Is the Life. Macdonald, on the other hand, said that Life in a Beautiful Sun was a more natural process. Before Macdonald's break, two songs from Life in a Beautiful Light were introduced. Macdonald was asked whether being a musician was a fulfilling career, as "In the End" was written.

Macdonald wrote "Human Spirit" after the Chilean miners' rescue. "Left That Body Long Ago" described her grandmother's decline into Alzheimer's disease, while "Across the Nile" is a reaction to the Arab Spring conflict.

"Slow It Down," "Pride," and "4th of July" were among the album's singles released on the album. Pride was written to express her displeasure with her appearance of the Flower of Scotland at Hampden Park prior to Scotland's international football games, according to BBC News.

In the End, Macdonald's last track on the album, In the End, was released in Surrey at the end of her previous tour and Life in a Beautiful Light. Pete Wilkinson was mixed by Bob Clearmountain, who had previously worked on her debut album. On June 2, 2012, she performed her song "Slow It Down" with the finalist of the Polish version of The X Factor, a girl group the Chance.

Macdonald began writing songs for a new album in early 2014, two years after the debut of her previous album Life in a Beautiful Light. In May 2014, she performed four new songs live. During the Scottish independence referendum in September 2014, she also sang "Leap of Faith." Macdonald revealed on Twitter in March 2015 that she was wrapping up the songwriting of the album, but that no one had started recording. She revealed on Twitter that she had begun recording sessions for the album on October 28, 2015. Later, she announced on her Instagram account that she had finished writing for the album and that she wished the album would be completed sometime in 2016. Macdonald revealed on Instagram on August 9, 2016, that her fourth album was finished and would be announced early 2017.

Macdonald said that although it was two and a half years in the making, it is the longest she had ever taken with an album, she was delighted to have taken the time and that the album has "the TLC that it so richly deserves."

On February 17, 2017, Macdonald introduced Under Stars, a new album. A video of an acoustic interpretation of new album track "Down by the Water" was also posted. She appeared on BBC Scotland's Hogmanay 2017 show, where she debuted her new single "Dream On."

Macdonald's debut, "Women of the World," was released in September 2018. The album was released on November 23, 2018. Macdonald has also announced a European tour, which she began in March and April 2019.

Macdonald began writing songs between 2018 and 2019, and she began recording her fifth studio album in February 2020. After an interruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in March, she returned to recording in June 2020.

She debuted "The Hudson," the album's top single, on August 27, 2020, and confirmed that the album's debut "The Human Inquiries" will be released on October 30, 2020. Macdonald has also revealed a European tour, which she will take part in between April and July 2021. Macdonald talked about the album and performed an acoustic version of the song "We Could Be So Much More" on BBC Radio 4's Front Row in November 2020.
