Ami James (born 6 April 1972) is an Israeli-American tattoo artist, television presenter, and entrepreneur.
Early life
James was born in the Egyptian city of Sharm El Sheikh (then occupied by Israel). His American-born father converted to Judaism three years before heading to Israel. His father, who had been living in Israel, joined the Israeli army and met James' mother, who had immigrated from Romania. As a child, James lived in both Israel and Egypt, but his father died before he was four years old, but his family moved to Egypt when James was four years old.
James, who suffered with severe ADD, confessed that he was attracted to art and tattooing from a young age, denying that his father had tattoos and was a painter.
Around age 11, James moved to the United States, where he spent with his paternal grandparents before moving to Miami at age 12. James' first tattoo made him decide to become a tattoo artist, not himself at the age of 15. James returned to Israel and joined Israel as an infantry sniper in his adolescence.
Career
He started his apprenticeship with tattoo artist Lou at Tattoos By Lou in 1992. Love Hate Tattoos, the co-owner (with Chris Néez) of the Miami Beach, Florida tattoo parlor Love Hate Tattoos, is the subject of TLC's reality television show Miami Ink. On his website, he said he was moving to New York and that his latest film, NY Ink, was scheduled to begin filming in March 2011. On June 2, 2011 the show premiered on June 2nd. In December 2011 and March 2, the second season of NY Ink premiered in December 2011 and ran until 31 March 2012.
