Family and early life
Modigliani was born in Livorno, Italy, to a Sephardic Jewish family. Livorno, a port city, had long been a destination for those persecuted for their faith, and was home to a large Jewish congregation. Solomon Garsin, his maternal great-grandfather, immigrated to Livorno as a migrant in the 18th century.
Eugénie Garsin, a mother of Modigliani who was born and raised in Marseille, was descendent from an intellectual, scholarly family of Sephardic descent who had lived along the Mediterranean coast for generations. Her ancestors were fluent in many languages, chiefs of sacred Jewish texts, and she established a Talmudic academy. Baruch Spinoza, a 17th-century Dutch scholar, is traced back to a family legend. The family business, which had branches in Livorno, Marseille, Tunis, and London, was money lending, but the family business devolved and flowed.
Flaminio Modigliani's father was a member of an Italian Jewish family of wealthy businessmen and entrepreneurs. Although not as technologically advanced as the Garsins, they did know how to invest in and foster flourishing company ventures. Flaminio was a wealthy young mining engineer when the Garsin and Modigliani families announced their children's involvement. He supervised the mine in Sardinia and also supervised the family's nearly 30,000 acres (12,141 ha) of timberland.
In 1883, this wealthy family experienced a reversal of fortune. The Modiglianis were forced into bankruptcy due to an economic decrease in the value of metal. Modigliani's mother, who was always resourceful, helped locate a school and forged it into a flourishing business alongside her two sisters.
Amedeo Modigliani was the fourth child of his father's business, whose birth coincided with his father's marital breakdown. Amedeo's birth saved the family from ruin; under an ancient rule, creditors could not capture the bed of a pregnant woman or a mother with a newborn child. The bailiffs broke into the family's home just as Eugénie went back to work; the family secured their most valuable assets by stacking them on top of her; she was able to defend her.
Modigliani had a close relationship with his mother, who taught him at home until he was ten years old. Since an outbreak of pleurisy when he was 11 years old, he had a case of typhoid fever a few years later. When he was 16 years old, he was sick again and contracted tuberculosis, which would later claim his life. After Modigliani recovered from his second bout of pleurisy, his mother took him on a tour of southern Italy: Naples, Capri, Rome and Amalfi, followed by Florence and Venice.
In many ways, his mother was instrumental in his ability to pursue art as a profession. "The child's behavior is still so young that I can't say what I think about it when she was 11 years old," she wrote in her diary. He behaves like a spoilt child, but he does not lack intelligence. We'll have to wait and see what is inside this chrysalis.
