Amber Nicole Benson (born January 8, 1977) is an American actress, writer, director, and producer.

She is best known for her role as Tara Maclay on the TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and has also directed, produced and starred in her own films Chance (2002) and Lovers, Liars & Lunatics (2006).

She also co-directed the film Drones with fellow Buffy cast member Adam Busch.

Early life

Benson was born January 8, 1977, in Birmingham, Alabama, the daughter of Diane and Edward Benson, a psychiatrist. She has a younger sister, Danielle, who is an artist. Her father is Jewish and her mother was raised Southern Baptist; Benson grew up attending a Reform synagogue in Alabama.

As a child, Benson studied music and dance, and performed in the Birmingham Children's Ballet, as well as in local theater. She attended high school (one of her classmates being Joey Fatone) in Orlando, Florida, after her family moved there, in part to help Amber pursue acting opportunities, the most prominent of which was an unsold television series called Kids' News, in which Amber was to have been one of two main anchors. The Bensons then relocated to Los Angeles, and Amber very quickly began to land roles in films and on television.

Personal life

As of 2007, Benson resided in Los Angeles. She described herself as a "lapsed vegetarian".

From 2002 to 2009, she dated Adam Busch, who played Warren Mears on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The two have remained close friends.

When she made her debut in the Steven Soderbergh film King of the Hill, Benson was 14 years old.

On the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Benson is best known for her role as Tara Maclay. The character appeared in the season 4 episode "Hush" and shortly became Willow Rosenberg's girlfriend (Alyson Hannigan). When her character was killed off in season 6, Benson stayed with the series until season 6. Benson was credited for the first time as a regular cast member in her last episode.

"Once More, with Feeling," Benson performed in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer musical episode "Once More, with Feeling." "I've Got a Theory/ Bunnies/If We're Together," "Under Your Spell," "Walk Through the Fire," "Standing/Under Your Spell (Reprise)," and "Where Do We Go From Here" were among the songs performed by her. She appeared on Buffy cowork Anthony Stewart Head's album Music for Elevators in 2002. At VH-1's celebrity karaoke tribute to The Rocky Horror Picture Show, she also sang "Toucha Touch Me" (aka "Creature of the Night).

Benson co-wrote The Theory of the Leisure Class, directed, produced, edited, and appeared in a digital video film film Chance (2002), which also featured Buffy co-star James Marsters. In 2003, she worked with director James Kerwin to produce her play Albert Hall in Hollywood.

Benson created the Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Willow and Tara comic book was co-produced by Golden, Terry Moore, and Eric Powell of Dark Horse Comics in 2001. She coauthored Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Wilderness #2 together with Christopher Golden and AJ (Ajit Jothikaumar) of Dark Horse Comics the following year.

With the animation studio Cosgrove Hall, Benson and Christopher Golden produced and launched a series of animated fantasy films for the BBC. The Ghosts of Albion: Legacy (2003) and its sequels are available on the BBC Cult website. Both Benson and Golden have collaborated on two supernatural thrillers: Ghosts of Albion: Accursed and Ghosts of Albion: Witchery. These books chronicle Tamara and William Swift's meteoric rise as a result of the BBC computer animated web film Ghosts of Albion: Legacy.

Traci Levine, along with Steve Sandvoss and Wes Ramsey, appeared in Latter Days as Traci Levine in 2003.

In 2005, Benson worked with artist Jamie McKelvie on a short story from the Image Comics collection Four Letter Worlds. Benson coproduced Demon Father John's Pinwheel Blues, a four-part split-book published by IDW in 2006, with work by Ashley Wood and Christina Z.

Benson's own production company, Benson Entertainment, produced her second independent feature film Lovers, Liars & Lunatics in 2006. The film was shot on film and was partially funded by the selling of limited edition "Triangle" Tara Buffyverse action figure. Producer Diane Benson, Amber's mother, named Lovers, Liars, and Lunatics after it was first referred to as "The Dirty Script."

On the television show Supernatural, Benson also played Lenore, a "vegetarian" vampire.

In December 2006, Benson and Golden began a new partnership, The Seven Whistlers, which is available through Subterranean Press in a limited number of signed copies. In September 2007, Benson signed a three-book contract with Penguin Books' Ginjer Buchanan. Death's Daughter was published by Ace Books on February 24, 2009; Cat's Claw was enacted on February 23, 2010; and Serpent's Storm occurred in February 2011. How to Be Death, the fourth book in the series, was published on February 28, 2012.

Benson is co-director of the 2010 comedy film Drones, alongside Adam Busch.

In the 2012 film "Dress Me in Dark Dreams," Benson played a young Judith Collins. Husbands, a Jane Espenson scripted romantic comedy web series, starred her guest.

In June 2013, it was confirmed that Benson would appear in the Morganville Vampires web TV series adaptation as Amelie, the founder of Morganville.

Lock In by John Scalzi, Benson narrated the 2014 audiobook Lock In. In October 2014, the Witches of Echo Park, a fantasy book by the author, was released.
