Amar Singh Chamkila was a well-known Punjabi singer, songwriter, guitarist, and composer.

Early life and career
In the village of Dugri near Ludhiana, Punjab, India, Amar Singh Chamkila was born as Dhani Ram on July 21, 1960 in a family belonging to the Chamar faith. He was educated at Gujar Khan Primary School in Dugri, and Hari Singh Sandila's youngest child. His aspirations of becoming an electrician were unfullled, and he began working at a Ludhiana cloth mill.
He learned to play the harmonium and dholki due to his natural talent for music. Chamkila rodesurd Shinda for the first time on a bicycle in 1978, along with his best friend Kuldeep Paras. When Shinda heard the 18-year-old Chamkila sing, he finally found the protégé he had been looking for. Chamkila will continue to perform alongside Punjabi folk performers, including K. Deep, Mohammad Sadiq, and Shinda. He wrote several songs for Shinda and accompanied him as a member of his entourage before deciding to pursue a solo career.
Chamkila was rumored to be content writing songs, but the family wasn't earning enough money to look after his children, so he had to start singing. Chamkila's first appearance in the studio was backing vocals alongside Kuldeep Paras on Surinder Shinda's hit song "Putt Jattan De" by Surinder Shinda.
He was brought to Gurmail Kaur by a family with whom he had two children, Amandeep Kaur and Kamaldeep Kaur. Chamkila's second marriage was with his co-singer Amarjot Kaur, with whom he has a son named Jaiman Chamkila. On the 23rd May 1983, it was a love marriage.
