Amanda Nunes Life

Amanda Lourenço Nunes (born May 30, 1988) is a Brazilian mixed martial artist who competes in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), in which she is the reigning champion of the women's bantamweight and featherweight divisions.

She is the first woman to win a two-division UFC title.

As of August 19, 2019, she is ranked fifth in the UFC women's bantamweight rankings.

Early life

Amanda Lourenço Nunes was born in Pojuca, a small town outside of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, as the daughter of Ivete and Sindoval Nunes. Valdirene and Vanessa are her two older sisters. Nunes and her siblings stayed with their mother after her parents split up when she was four years old. Mrs. Ivete, a school administrative assistant, sold hot-dogs, candy, and beauty items as part of her regular job as a single parent. Nunes said that her father did not endorse her fighting career at the beginning, but that has since changed direction.

Nunes has portrayed her mother as a caring but strict parent.

"I was afraid of her!

I was afraid to death. My mother was always a stern woman; she just looked at me and wondered if I was already frozen. "I had and still have a great deal of admiration for her," she says. Ivete encouraged her daughter to partake in sports as a way to deal with her excess energy.

Nunes started out in elementary school as a member of the local Pojuca squad and later in Salvador as a member of the Salvador team. She eventually had the opportunity to try out for the Vitória football club but she was unable to participate due to her mother's insistence that she put her attention on studies.

José Silva, Nunes' uncle, was a Vale Tudo soldier. During his fights, her mother, Ivete, who herself trained boxing, cornered him. Nunes started capoeira lessons at age five after her school teacher complained that she was too hyperactive in class. At the age of seven, she began learning karate.

Following Vanessa's invitation to a dojo, she began training in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. She was also interested in boxing at this time. Despite being the only female at the gym, she soon began dominating her training partners in sparring. At age 17, she defited all of her opponents and joined the Edson Carvalho academy, under the tutelage of his brother, Ricardo Carvalho. She has also started training in judo. She and her sister shared an apartment, but because it was too far away from the gym, she accepted her coach's invitation to move there. Since she was the only girl and because the academy's logo is based on two lions, her teacher and other students began referring to her "Leoa" (lioness in Portuguese), a word she still uses.

Nunes were soon competing in the BJJ tournaments. Among her best achievements in this sport were a gold medal at the Pan American Jiu-Jitsu Championship in 2009 as a purple belt and a world champion of the North American Grappling Association (NAGA) in the lightweight and absolute divisions. She currently has a black belt in BJJ and a brown belt in judo.

Nunes began training MMA at Edson Carvalho's gym in 2007. She lived in New Jersey and trained at AMA Fight Club before heading to Miami to prepare at MMA Masters. She is currently training at American Top Team in Coconut Creek, Florida, where she is currently enrolled.

Personal life

Nunes is the first openly lesbian UFC champion. Nina Nunes (née Ansaroff), a UFC fighter, is married to fellow UFC fighter Nina Nunes (née Ansaroff), who competes in the strawweight division. She attributes her UFC triumph to their friendship. Raegan Ann Nunes, her husband's first child, was born on September 24, 2020.
