Career
Marcotte has been dubbed "an outspoken voice of the left," Time magazine reports, "There is a welcome winkishness to Marcotte," who, unlike some well-known bloggers, isn't afraid to debate her readers. Time also described her blogging as "provocative and profanity-laced."
Marcotte made several inflammatory remarks on her blog in early 2007, including criticism of the men who were mistakenly accused in the Duke lacrosse case, using vulgar words to refer to Catholic teaching on the Virgin birth of Jesus and saying that the Catholic Church's opposition to birth control stems from a desire to coerce women to "bear more tithing Catholics."
Marcotte has appeared at Skepticon, SXSW, Women In Secularism 2, and Skepchickcon. She served in the Secular Student Alliance's speakers' bureau.
Marcotte is the author of It's a Jungle Out There: The Feminist Survival Guide to Politically Inhospitable Environments (2008), Get Opinionated (2010), and Troll Country: How The Right Became Trump-Worshiping Monsters Set On Rat-F*cking Liberals, America, and Truth Itself (2018).
Marcotte writes full-time for Salon; her stories are often republished and syndicated through partner websites, including Raw Story and Alternet.
Although Edwards was "personally offended" by some of Marcotte's remark about the Catholic Church, the postmaster's position as their blogmaster was secure, and John Edwards was hired as its blogmaster on January 30, 2007.
Marcotte resigned from the Edwards campaign after a scathing review. In an article for Salon a few days later, she said her resignation was a result of being "right-wing smear machine" being attacked.
