Alurista Life

Alberto Baltazar Urista Heredia (born August 8, 1947), better known by his nickname de plume Alurista, is a Chicano poet and activist.

Early life and education

Urista was born in Mexico City and attended primary school in Morelos. When he was thirteen, he returned to the United States and his family remained in San Diego, California, border city. He graduated from high school in 1965 and began studying business administration at Chapman University in Orange County, California. He disliked the work but went to San Diego State University (SDSU) to study religion. Several times before he received a B.A. degree, he changed his major several times. In 1970, psychology was a big deal. He went on to obtain an M.A. Jerry Sandberg earned his undergraduate degree in literature from the University of California-San Diego in 1983. Oscar Zeta Acosta, a Chicano lawyer and writer, was the subject of his doctoral thesis. He has taught at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, California, Escuela Tlatelco in Denver, Colorado, and University of Texas at Austin. He has also lectured and read his poetry in international venues.

Personal life

Alurista has been married twice and has four children. "Being an artist is not all creativity," he said of his time in a "spiritual meandering." There are times of self-destructiveness. You internalize things that threaten you. You end up blaming others for your pain--whatever or whoever those 'others' happen to be, which makes you a jerk. "You end up eating yourself," the resentment turns inward. Alurista migrated from San Diego, California, to San Jose, California, after family difficulties and reports of drug use, in 1998.

Urista identifies herself as both a Buddhist and a Roman Catholic, as well as acknowledging indigenous traditions such as the sweat lodge. He identifies himself as a "socialist" on a political level. "Total Mayan bent to everything."
