Allie X Career

Career

Hughes began her career under the stage name Allie Hughes in Toronto around 2006, playing indie pop, indie rock, jazz, and experimental music. Waiting for the Prize, a 10-track demo album that she performed while attending college, was released in 2006.

She appeared on CBC Television's How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria? in 2008, the Canadian version based on the same name that aired in the United Kingdom on BBC One in 2006. She appeared on "My Favorite Things" from The Sound of Music and "It's Oh So Quiet" by Björk, but she was kicked out from the program after two weeks. Ladies and Gentlemen is her second demo album from the same year.

In 2009, she began recording her debut studio album, alongside Dave Newfeld of Broken Social Scene, Leon Taheny, and Run With Kittens' Adam King. The Hard Way was supposed to be released in fall 2010, but it was postponed to 2011 before being cancelled. In 2010, she also launched a 4-track self-titled extended play that was supposed to act as a "preview" for the forthcoming project.

Hughes began to form ALX, a synth-pop and experimental inspired band that was not canceled after the cancellation of The Hard Way. The group's debut and sole single, "I Will Love You More," debuted in March 2012 and had their last known live performance at the Hillside Festival in July, where they performed a total of seven unreleased original songs and one cover.

Her acting appearances include many Canadian films and television shows, including The Boys in the Photograph, King, Being Erica and Instant Star, and Love Me.

Hughes decided in July 2013 to pursue a full-time job as a writer in Los Angeles. Despite this, she didn't stop doing her solo work. She wasn't happy with her appearance and spent time learning about sound design and production. She took the stage name Allie X and began working with designers Cirkut and Billboard, who she had encountered during her stay in Los Angeles.

Hughes' debut single under the Allie X brand in early 2014, titled "Catch." "Catch" received laud from multiple outlets following its unveiling, including DIY magazine's Jamie Milton, who said, "Allie X stepped on the scene like a bottle of wine at a wedding – everybody wanted a piece of her." The track "shines with a degree of polish and craft that is remarkable," according to Jamieson Cox of Time magazine, and complements Hughes' "attention to detail." On Twitter, fellow singer-songwriter Katy Perry lauded the album, calling it her "spring jam." On the Canadian Hot 100, "catch" was also charted, with a peak on the chart at number 55. In November 2015, "Catch" was re-released as an EP, with additional tracks included.

"Prime" and "Bitch," Hughes' debut extended play, were released on March 18th and April 4, respectively. CollXtion I was released a year later, in Canada, on April 7, 2015, with the global release of the XIXTION I being postponed until April 21. The EP was also well received by Edmonton Journal's Julia LeConte, "a well-written seven-song EP that delivers up a smorgasboard of indelible hooks," Hughes' music enhancing skills matches her "spectacular" voice. In 2015, she completed a brief North American tour.

Hughes wrote a total of seven songs, including two of the album's three singles, "Talk Me Down" and "Youth," in addition to working on solo music in 2014. She joined Troye Sivan on his 2016 North American leg, thanks in large part to this.

In 2013, Hughes was one of four musicians to be in possession of the Canadian Film Centre Slaight Music Residency Showcase.

Despite having released albums and EPs in the past, Hughes has yet to announce a studio album under the Allie X name. "Old Habits Die Hard," Hughes' first attempt at selling "Old Habits Die Hard" as a non-album single in February 2016. Hughes released "Too Much to Dream" on May 13th and revealed a project called CollXtion II: nsolved, which saw her unveiling of a series of demos and songs on Spotify over the summer in the hopes of narrowing the number of songs her fans wanted to see on CollXtion II. This effort came to an end on September 6, 2016, with Hughes stating that no new music will be released until the album's release.

CollXtion II first appeared in February 2017, with the 1st appearance of the product on September 23rd. "Paper Love" became Hughes' first single from the forthcoming album on April 28. On May 26, 2017, "Need You" was released.

Hughes' "Focus" became her first single from her then-untitled second studio album on June 1st, followed by the release of the second single "Not so Bad in LA" on July 13th. Hughes' long play, Super Sunset, would be published in the forthcoming fall, as well as a four-date promotional tour called "The Super Sunset Xperience," the following Monday. Hughes's new album Super Sunset, which is an alternate version of her previously published album Super Sunset, was unveiled on December 25th.

Hughes released "Fresh Laundry" on September 26, 2019 as part of a music video for her next album, which was then untitled. On October 17, this was followed by "Rings a Bell." "Regulars," the third single, was unveiled on November 8th. "Love Me Wrong," Troye Sivan's fourth album, was released on December 6th. Allie revealed the pre-order, album artwork, and album title for her forthcoming album, Cape God, on her social media pages on December 16th. On January 31, 2020, Devil I Know" would be the fifth single released. The album was released on February 21, 2020. Hughes' vocals were included on "Shadow" by Dutch electro music duo Vicetone, which was released on Canadian label Monstercat on October 30. "Susie Save Your Love" is also a Mitski collab. In the seventh episode of Canada's Drag Race, she appeared as a guest host.

She appeared in the 2021 virtual version of Pride Toronto.

Hughes released "Mistress Violet," a single starring drag queen Violet Chachki, produced by French producer Lecomte De Brégeot and written by Hughes in July 2021. The song's 1980s inspired music video, which includes Hughes and Chachki in Schiaparelli haute couture outfits. In the music video for her 2016 single "All the Rage," Chachki appeared with Hughes previously.
