Early life
Allen R. Hunt was born in Los Angeles, California, on January 6, 1964. He has one brother, James Hunt. He was born in Brevard, North Carolina. Hunt and his family migrated to Lakeland, Florida, where Hunt graduated from high school. He married Anita Griffin in 1988; they have two children, Sarah Ann and Griffin Elizabeth.
Education
Hunt attended Lakeland High School. He earned a Master of Divinity degree at Emory University's Candler School of History in Macon, Georgia, and then completed a Master of Divinity degree at Emory University's Candler School of Theology. In 1994, Hunt earned his Ph.D. in New Testament and Ancient Christian Origins at Yale University.
Professional life
Hunt worked with Kurt Salmon Associates, an international management consulting firm. He concentrated on strategic planning and marketing for textile and apparel businesses as well as some work in mergers and acquisitions.
Hunt then returned to school to pursue full-time ordained ministry in the United Methodist Church. Hunt served in three local churches, including Carrollton, Georgia; Rome, Georgia; and Mount Pisgah United Methodist Church in Alpharetta, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta. His ministry included stints as the leader of a small, rural church, a new church revival, and a large megachurch with a membership of over 8,000.
Hunt, who later became The Allen Hunt Show on WSB, became part of a new ministry venture that developed into The Allen Hunt Show. Allen Hunt grew to both a full-time pastor and a talk show radio host, so he stepped down from his pastoral duties at Mount Pisgah United Methodist Church in 2007 and became a full-time talk show radio host. The Allen Hunt Show developed from a small weekend presence in Atlanta to a nationally syndicated weekend show by Cox Radio on Saturday and Sunday nights in markets all around the country.
Allen was voted one of the top hitters in talk radio in February, 2009, earning an unprecedented accolade for a newcomer in the field.
Hunt severed his ties with the United Methodist Church in January 2008 and declared his conversion to Catholicism. He is now a partner with Matthew Kelly of the Dynamic Catholic Institute.
