Alison Margaret Arngrim (born January 18, 1963) is a Canadian-American actress and author.
Arngrim, who began her television career at the age of 12, is a Young Artist Award-winning child actor best known for her portrayal of Nellie Oleson on the NBC television show Little House on the Prairie from 1974 to 1981.
Early life
Thor Arngrim, Arngrim's father, was a Canadian-born Hollywood producer. Norma MacMillan of Vancouver, British Columbia, was an actress who performed as Gumby on Gumby, as Davey and Goliath, and Sweet Polly Purebred on Underdog, as well as other animated children's shows.
Stefan (b. ) is her brother. 1955 (born in 1955) was also a child actor, perhaps best known for his role as Barry Lockridge on the Irwin Allen science fiction television series Land of the Giants. When she was aged from 13 to 16, Arngrim said that her brother sexually assaulted her from age six to nine. Arngrim has admitted to the abuse, but isn't particularly concerned about his conduct. She also claims that she no longer has any kind of friendship with her brother, which she believes has improved her life.
Acting career
Arngrim came to fame as a child model and actor in television commercials, starring Nellie Oleson in the NBC television series Little House on the Prairie in 1974. Laura Ingalls and, later, Mary Ingalls, had applied for the role, but she was later seen in the role of antagonist Nellie Oleson. Arngrim would appear in Nellie for seven seasons, and her performance became a cultural reference and camp archetype for the spoiled "bad girl" during the 1970s.
Arngrim said playing Nellie on Little House on The Prairie was "like having PMS for seven years," she said in one of her stand-up routines. She was given the Young Artist Foundation's "Lifetime Achievement" Award in 2002 for her appearance as a child actor on Little House. Arngrim tied for second place at the 2006 TV Land Awards with Danielle Spencer ('Dee' on What's Happening!') "Character Most in Need of a Time Out" for her role as Nellie.
In addition to her appearance on Little House, Arngrim produced Heeere's Amy, which portrayed first daughter Amy Carter. On the album, her mother, who sang of the Kennedy children on Vaughn Meader's comedy albums, appeared on it as well as a guest star. Arngrim appeared in guest roles on television series such as The Love Boat and Fantasy Island after leaving Little House. She has also appeared on the short-lived NBC game show Match Game-Hollywood Squares Hour.
She began performing on stage in France with her companion, author/comedian Patrick Loubatière, starting in 2006. Emily Brent appeared in Judson Theatre Company's production of Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None in Pinehurst, North Carolina, in 2017.
