Temperley London, the designer's fashion company, was founded in 2000. The Guardian announced in 2006 that she had been dubbed by American Vogue as the designer making the biggest waves in British fashion.
She has been described as the "English Ralph Lauren" more recently.
Personal life
Temperley is the granddaughter of mathematical physicist Neville Temperley. When working as a waitress at the Met Bar in Mayfair, she met her husband, Lars von Bennigsen, in 1998. The UK edition of Vogue covered the wedding in 2002 in a 1920s-style affair.
Temperley welcomed her first child, a boy named Fox London Temperley von Bennigsen Mackiewicz, five days after the Temperley London SS09 fashion show opened in September 2008. In 2012, she and her husband were divorced.
Career
Alice Temperley grew up in Somerset, on her parents' cider farm, and graduated from the Royal College of Art and Central Saint Martins. Temperley was founded in 2000 by her then boyfriend Lars von Bennigsen, who also lived in Temperley. The brand has exploded as a result of its emphasis on luxurious fabrics and hand-finishes.
Temperley held her first fashion preview in Notting Hill, London, in 2003. She migrated her fashion shows to New York in 2005, with the exception of the Spring Summer 2009 exhibition in London. At the British Museum, the brand's tenth anniversary show was held.
Temperley's collections were shown in multimedia installations rather than traditional catwalk shows for four seasons, from 2009 to 2011.
