Alexis Weissenberg Career

Early life and career

Weissenberg, a Bulgarian composer, began taking piano lessons at the age of three. He appeared in public for the first time at the age of eight.

He and his mother attempted to flee from German-controlled Bulgaria to Turkey in 1941, but were arrested and detained in a three-month jail in Bulgaria's makeshift concentration camp. A German guard, who had loved seeing Alexis play Schubert on the accordion, hurriedly brought him and his mother to the train station, extending the accordion to him through the window and saying, "Good luck." They safely arrived in Istanbul a day later.

They immigrated to Palestine in 1945, where Weissenberg studied with Leo Kestenberg and performed Beethoven with the Israel Philharmonic under Leonard Bernstein's direction. Weissenberg, a 1946 graduate, went to the Juilliard School to study with Olga Samaroff. He also worked with Artur Schnabel and Wanda Landowska.

Weissenberg made his New York City debut with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and George Szell in Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 77. Weissenberg also performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra and Eugene Ormandy, with whom Weissenberg won the Leventighey Competition. He took an extended sabbatical between 1957 and 1965 for the sake of learning and teaching. Weissenberg began his career in 1966 with a Paris appearance. He appeared in Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 later this year. Herbert von Karajan, one of the best pianists of our time, conducted a one in Berlin.

Piano master classes were offered around the world by Weissenberg. Kirill Gerstein, Simon Mulligan, Ivan Moravec, Mehmet Okonsar [1], Nazzareno Carusi, Loris Karpell, and Roberto Carnevale were among his students at his Piano Master Class in Engelberg (Switzerland), including Kirill Gerstein, Simon Mulligan, Ivan Moravec, Andre Karpell, and Roberto Carnevale. Nostalgie, he composed piano music and a ballet that premiered at the State Theatre of Darmstadt on October 17, 1992.

Weissenberg died in Lugano, Switzerland, on January 8, 2012, at the age of 82. David, Cristina, and Maria were all survived by three children.
