Alexi Laiho Life

Alexi "Wildchild" Laiho (born Markku Uula Laiho; 8 April 1979) is a Finnish guitarist, composer, and singer.

He is best known as the lead guitarist, lead vocalist, and founding member of the melodic death metal band Children of Bodom, as well as Sinergy, The Local Band, and Kylähullut.

He has worked with Thy Serpent and Impaled Nazarene as well as Warmen and Hypocrisy. Laiho's guitar work has received acclaim.

According to Guitar World, he ranked #96 out of 100 Greatest Heavy Metal Guitarists of All Time in 2004.

He has also been ranked as one of the world's fastest guitarists.

In addition, Roadrunner Records ranked Laiho at #41 out of 50 of the Greatest Metal Frontmen of All Time.

In addition, Total Guitar held a public poll to determine the best metal guitarist of all time; Laiho was voted the top metal guitarist of all time; with over 20% of the vote.

Personal life and death

During a private ceremony in Finland on February 1, 2002, Laiho married long-time girlfriend and Sinergy frontwoman Kimberly Goss. They had identical tattoos of a coiled snake on their ring fingers and also had each other's initials tattooed on the upper portion of their left arm. According to official records, Laiho applied for divorce alone in November 2002 but then retracted his paperwork and never to apply again. As reported by the Finnish press, the couple broke off in 2004, but they were on good terms and had regular text and video contact until the day he died. The public back and forth exchange between Laiho's sister and widow culminated in a public debate and exchange, with both sides broadcasting their aches to the Finnish media.

Laiho's demise from Goss was followed by Kristen Mulderig, Slayer's manager, for many years. He began a relationship with Kelli Wright, an Australian public relations manager who became engaged to September 2016, and the two married in a traditional handfasting ceremony, December 2017. It was revealed by Finnish news outlets that he had never divorced from Goss, implying that his marriage to Wright was not legally binding.

Laiho had a long history of heroin use, which eventually contributed to his death. In an interview in 2019, he talked about how the stresses of being on the road affected him; he mentioned the album "This Road" from 2019's Hexed, "A lot of people thought it was about alcoholism, but it's more about being addicted to being on the road. After 20 years of being on the road, it's often that everything just becomes a blur and you don't know what the hell is going on." He talked about how he used to drink heavily, but he slowed down in 2013 and said that Hexed's first album, "Under Grass and Clover," chronicled the agony of separation.

Laiho had died the previous week, according to a post on his official Facebook page on January 4th 2021. There was no confirmed cause of death, only stating that he died at his Helsinki home due to "long-term health problems in his last years." The death date was later announced to be 29 December 2020. On January 28, 2021, Laiho's private funeral service was held.

On March 5, 2021, Kimberly Goss reported the official cause of Laiho's death on Instagram: "alcohol-induced degeneration of the liver and pancreas connective tissue." In addition, a mixture of painkillers, opioids, and insomnia drugs was discovered in his body. The cause of death was originally revealed in Finnish as "maksan rasvarapaminen ja haiman sidekudostuminen," and a more accurate English translation would be fatty liver disease and pancreatic fibrosis. Alexi's sister states that the family wanted the truth of his death to remain private, but Goss maintains that it was his right as his legal widow to announce the news and bring closure to his families, in the hopes of assisting others struggling with these same demons.

Laiho's ashes were laid to rest on December 8, 2021, just one day after Goss held a private memorial service.

Alexi Laiho Career

Career

Laiho began playing violin and guitar at the age of seven and 11. Helloween was his first influence when he first started playing guitar, but he later became involved in more popular metal bands such as Manowar, Helloween, Judas Priest, and W.A.P. "Tokai Stratocaster" was his first guitar.

After participating in an experimental band named T.O.L.K. in 1993, she formed T.O.L.K. Children of Bodom was born alongside drummer Jaska Raatikainen under the name IneartheD with a friend of his.

Children of Bodom appeared in Helsinki on October 31, 1997, the first concert for Norway's Dimmu Borgir.

"We could hear the opening band playing from backstage," Silenoz, a Dimmu Borgir guitarist, on Laiho's first appearance: It sounded like Yngwie Malmsteen was on speed.' We rushed out and watched the spectacle as we stood there with our jaws open." Kimberly Goss, Dimmu's then-keyboardist, and married him in 2002, says, "This fucking beast on the guitar." "I was admiring our guitar player as "I don't know, man, you have some competition."

With Sinergy, Laiho released three full-length albums. An unreleased fourth album was recorded and was supposed to be released in 2005, but the finishing touches were never completed due to Laiho's busy schedule with Children of Bodom.

In 2004, Laiho founded Kylähullut, a side-project that was co-constructed by drummer Tonmi Lillman (ex-Sinergy) and singer Vesa Jokinen 69er of Finnish punk band Klamydia. The band was created solely for the musician's enjoyment and takes a carefree approach to their music. Their discography includes two EP's and two full-length albums, one of which features Laiho's wife, Goss, who debuts in the Finnish language on the band's self-titled song.

The children of Bodom were included in the 2008 Metal Hammer Golden Gods Awards. Laiho was also named for "Best Shredder" by the Dimebag Award in 2008 and performed a track from Bodom's album, Blooddrunk.

On the album "Downright Dominate," Laiho appears on Canadian thrash metal outfit Annihilator's 2007, "Metal."

Children of Bodom revealed on their Facebook page on July 3rd that they had to cancel two European shows because Laiho had been admitted to the hospital due to severe stomach pain. The frontman was hospitalized in Nashville once more the following year, sparking rumors of his alcohol use, which he'd later address in several interviews.

Children of Bodom, dubbed "A Chapter Called Children of Bodom" at the Icehall in Helsinki, performed on December 15th; after this performance, the group would disband after more than two decades together. Laiho will no longer be able to use the Children of Bodom name for a legal reason.

In March 2020, Laiho would officially unveil his new band alongside former Bodom guitarist Daniel Freyberg, Bodom After Midnight, which also stars drummer Waltteri Väyrynen and bassist Mitja Toivonen.

Laiho died on December 29, 2020, as a result of years of alcohol use, leaving only a few songs with Bodom After Midnight that were released posthumously. Several months later, Daniel Freyberg told Loudwire that Bodom After Midnight would disband rather than replacing Laiho.
